Dartmoor is an area of 368 square miles of moorland in south Devon, England, comprised mostly of uncultivated hill land.
History[]
In 1379, Dartmoor was the site of a duelling contest in which wizards and witches from across Europe came to partake: according to contemporary reports, the contest (which was held at night, so as to avoid attracting the attention of Muggles) featured duelling of a level of skill that was almost unprecedented. Elizabeth Smudgling won this contest with a single Disarming Charm (a charm that, in the opinion of Miranda Goshawk, was of Smudgling's own making) and was subsequently awarded the title of "Supreme Dueller".[1]

In September 1927, Newt Scamander and Jacob Kowalski headed to Dartmoor, where they used a portkey to get to Paris.[2]

In August 1994, the 422nd Quidditch World Cup was held in a "nice deserted moor"[3] in Dartmoor.[4] For that purpose, a gigantic stadium was built, with seats for one hundred thousand wizards.[5] Wizards camped at Mr Roberts's campsite. In the night of 26 August, hours after the Cup final, a site was a place of Death Eater riot.[6]
On 2 September 1997, Harry Potter with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, on the run from British Ministry of Magic, Apparated to the forest in Dartmoor, where three years earlier they hid after Death Eaters stormed the campground. They set up protections and spent a night camped out in the woods.[7] Next morning, before disapparating from the place, Harry found the oldest, most gnarled and resilient-looking tree he could find. Under the tree, he buried the Alastor Moody's eye, found earlier in the Dolores Umbridge's office in the Ministry Headquarters, and marked the grave with a small cross.[8]
Behind the scenes[]
- For the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, scenes at the Quidditch World Cup Campsite were filmed at Beachy Head, in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Beachy Head is known for its chalk sea cliffs, which are seen on the film. While the novel does not specify where the campsite was located, exactly, later, Pottermore revealed it was in Dartmoor, which is actually landlocked.
