- "There are all sorts of enchantments on it, to stop people entering by stealth. You can't just Apparate in here."

The Anti-Apparition Charm (incantation unknown) was a charm that prevented people from Apparating into an area.[1] It was cast on the entire castle and grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry long ago,[3][4] and could only be lifted by the Headmaster of the time.[4]
History[]
Many magical places, such as British Ministry of Magic Headquarters, French Ministry of Magic Headquarters, Woolworth Building (headquarters of the MACUSA), the Cave, Nurmengard Castle, Hogwarts Castle, Azkaban, and the cellar in Malfoy Manor were warded off against Apparition, which prevented people from simply appearing inside those places, forcing them to have to physically venture to them or Apparate near them. The Anti-Apparition Charm was typically used to keep out unwanted visitors from a certain location.
Anti-Apparition Charms were placed on the castle and grounds of Hogwarts. When student transportation to and from was unregulated, prior to the inception of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy in 1692, some students tried to Apparate into the castle grounds, often with disastrous results because of this charm.[1] Despite this, the charm could be temporarily lifted in the Great Hall by the headteacher of the day for students who were participating in Apparition classes, like in the 1996–1997 school year.[4] Additionally, the Charm does not affect the Room of Requirement, or at least the form of the Room that the fifth-year student manifested during the 1890s.[5]
The Cave was enchanted with this charm, as Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore were forced to approach it from a distance and overcome Lord Voldemort's enchantments to enter. Additionally, one could not Disapparate to get out, due to the Anti-Disapparition Jinx having been placed upon it as well.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
- Another two similar spells exist:
- The Anti-Disapparition Jinx, a spell of the same kind but prevents people from Disapparating out from an area.
- The Anti-intruder jinx, a spell which prevents intruders from entering a certain area within its range. It may have the same or similar effect of the Anti-Apparition Charm.
