Night Shift automatically shifts the colors of your display to the warmer end of the color spectrum after dark. More info on the Night Shift feature in macOS.

Note

The article reflects app version v2.2.3

When you use your television as a computer monitor, you might want to enjoy the Night Shift feature of macOS with your television. By default macOS offers this feature for computer monitors only.

Sometimes your computer monitor (typically when connected via HDMI) is erroneously detected as a television by the OS which causes Night Shift to be disabled.

Warning

Night Shift is available for natively connected displays only. Display Link, Sidecar cannot use this feature. With these displays you can enable Metal image adjustments under the display's settings and use the color temperature slider to achieve a similar effect.

Forcing a display to be recognized as a computer monitor

In order to enable Night Shift for your television, you need to force the display to be detected as a "computer monitor" instead of "television". Follow these steps to achieve this:

  1. Go to the display under Settings > Displays
  2. Enable Edit the system configuration of this display model setting
  3. Open More system configuration options
  4. Enable the Edit display role feature
  5. Set the Edited display role to Computer monitor
  6. Click the Apply button under the There are some unapplied system configuration settings text in the sidebar.
  7. Enter your Administrator credentials and reboot your Mac as instructed.

After this, Night Shift should be available for your display. You can check whether the operation was successful by looking at the Current display role value in the display role section.
