A letter sent to Apple Developer Relations.
Dear Apple,
We are a collection of augmented reality (AR) enthusiasts and professionals (from business and academia), who have been working on a multitude of AR apps for the iPhone. These apps are poised to change the way people interact with the real world.
But here is the rub: we are currently unable to publish these apps on the app store because the iPhone SDK lacks public APIs for manipulating live video.
We are asking Apple to provide a public API to access live video in real time, on the iPhone.
We will be happy to offer additional technical details.
The impact of augmented reality (AR) on our lives could be as significant as the introduction of the PC.
In 10 years, we believe augmented reality will change the way everyone experiences travel, design, training, personal productivity, health care, entertainment, games, art, and advertising (videos).
Looking back just a few years, AR pioneers had to hack a slew of components into ridiculously large backpacks and HUDs, and be confined to rigged environments. Nowadays, it comes in friendly, affordable packages and the iPhone is one of the first devices to have it all – except for a public API.
The battle to determine the winning device has already begun; a public API to access live video will give the iPhone a lucrative ticket to compete.
We believe Apple has a window of opportunity of about 3 months before developers start looking elsewhere. If Apple decides to publish the API in that time frame – in the next 10 years, everyone might be using the iPhone as the preferred device to interact with the real world.
Here is how augmented reality could open up new opportunities for the iPhone this year:
Arf (Georgia Tech)
a virtual pet you take anywhere
ARghhhh (Georgia Tech)
first person table-top action game
Sekai Camera (Tonchidot)
AirTag the real world
Kweekies (int13)
a portal to creatures in a parallel world
Layar (SPRXmobile)
Browse the world with an AR browser – Details
Artoolkit for the iPhone (Artoolworks)
the most popular AR kit now on the iPhone
StudierStube ES (Imagination, Graz TU)
the only AR engine designed for mobile devices, now on iPhone – Details
PTAM on the iPhone (Oxford University)
next generation AR tracking with no markers or images
Wikitude (Mobilizy)
a travel guide that “tells you what you see”
Virtual Santa (Metaio)
interactive Christmas application using the augmented reality
Augmented Reality Sightseeing (Fraunhofer IGD)
Historic photographs overlaid on your field of view while strolling in a street
These are apps that are practically ready to go. There is a whole bunch of apps and games that are just waiting for the API to be available.
…And Apple, we know you can’t share your plans…so please surprise us soon!
Many many thanks for your consideration –
Sincerely,
Signed:

Robert Rice – CEO Neogence
Georg Klein – PhD PTAM creator from Oxford University
Stephane Cocquereaumont – President & Lead Developer Int13 (Kweekies)

I agree, this would be a great step forward.
i’m not a developer, but why can’t the same thing be done on the Android operating system?
I’m not a professional developer, I’m only starting my PhD studies at Universitat Autonónoma de Barcelona (Spain) and I’m very interested to work on augmented reality over the iPhone. I join to your effort! :)
This is the exact same problem we have with the flash player up to version 9 – meaning it is impossible to directly load and process an image from the computer ( images have first to be sent to the server and retrieved before being manipulated…. duh…)
Security issues or not this is a pure non-sense at the user level. These restrictions dramatically degrades the user experiences and prevent brilliant developers to market brilliant apps.
Hope this is gonna change soon.
hmmm, being a cynic (and partly paranoid), maybe Apple is waiting till they’ll have their own AR application? They’ll call it iAugment, it would be pretty, monopolistic, and we would all pay a lot of money to get it.
@ rouli – I understand the concern given Apple’s track record, but I’m not sure how that would work. Plus, Apple is getting ready to take on Amazon for the eBook market. I think AR, while loaded with future potential, is still not on everyone’s radar.
For the paranoids among us –
in a conversation with Apple employees they confirmed: “Apple is interested in enabling this type of apps.”
It’s just a matter of time. The aim of this letter is to help Apple accelerate the decision…
The iPhone 3.0 OS doesn’t already have the ability to process the incoming video stream? Wow. I thought those were the “video APIs” that they announced.
In any case, I’m all for pushing Apple to enable more AR apps ASAP. I’m replacing my Treo soon, and was thinking Android because AFAIK the video out APIs are also not supported. (Or maybe those are the ones you’re asking for.)

I have no sympathy for this petition because it’s certainly possible on lots of other devices, and would be much easier. There’s tons of Android phones coming out, there’s the DS & PSP, etc. Rather than hitting your heads against Apple’s wall repeatedly, just move on!
Apple has always taken the stance that their products are like appliances (they have explicitly said this). They don’t want people to have much control over anything. They want you to think of it as a toaster. It has a specific purpose, and it does that purpose well, but it is not adaptable or upgradeable.

@Lars –
Yes, AR is possible on other devices, but since the developers signing the letter are trying to reach a wide audience – the iPhone is a very attractive vehicle: it currently has the unique combination of a huge market share and the best distribution mechanism for mobile apps.
And to reiterate, Apple employees did confirm “Apple is interested in enabling this type of apps.” They want
We believe having a conversation is better than keeping our thoughts to ourselves and being grumpy…;)
Apple knows very well that taking control of their products can get better solutions. For example: Do you think that a simple “cut & paste” option it’s a main feature? At the very first sight it isn’t, obviously! If you search at the Cydia store you can find 101 solutions to this simple operation, but no one like the apple’s one. They hold on even this simple things until they get the correct solution: the best one nowadays.
You can extrapolate this to… if something can’t be achieved with this hardware or the software solution that apple have at the moment isn’t as good as they want, it SIMPLY DOESN’T EXIST. You have to wait for it. It is very fair.
This could be what’s happening in the realtime API for video… they aren’t omnipotent, not every thing could be implemented at the same time if you want to have a good implementation ;) Probably a mobile phone processor makes this implementation enoughly difficult, isn’t it?
Lars, it is a toaster, but the most fashionable, usable and productive toaster you can buy today… tomorrow another could be the new toaster ;)
And finally, and the most important fact… the distribution machinery started by apple is priceless, them get a 30% of your selling (and you’ve got to pass a validation) but you can sell your apps worldwide thanks to their store and you can luckily (with a good app) get a huge income. Their role in this is extremely fair. Other distribution industries are much more awful (in cinema for example).
And, let me add some questions: Nintendo DS and Sony PSP haven’t “public” SDKs, isn’t it?. And Android (java) doesn’t seem the best platform for graphics performance in augmented reality, isn’t it? Nokia Symbian have an awful SDK, isn’t it? and Windows Mobile is evil xD
See you, (and if you get here… thanks for your time reading my boring speech :P)
Cheers!

Fastest route to making AR on the iPhone happen is to provide true html5 video & audio support – as in rendering in the browser as opposed to a fullscreen QuickTime window.
Combine this with extending the html5 geolocation API to support position and momentum – exposing the accelerometer and magnetometer to webapps upon the user granting permission.
Now add a dash of exposing the video camera via a javascript API, render it all to an html5 canvas element and bingo, AR for everyone.
Very nice. I couldn’t resist :) http://7billionfriends.tumblr.com/post/137497989/an-open-letter-to-apple-re-augmented-reality-on-the

As others have realized, not allowing the support for developers to create AU apps will hurt Apple in the long run as they will fall to the wayside to Android like open source devices who offer more freedom to both the developer and the end user. Apple should be careful with future moves or they just might blow their own cover as actually being just another Microsoft with locked doors and pricey products (when compared to the idea that there will soon be free alternatives such as Android or Chrome OS).

[…] It’s obvious that AR is moving into mobile in a huge way. Out of all the demos I’ve seen, the best ones are deployed on phones, the majority being iPhones. Right now, in the iPhone SDK, the video API is too limited so all those demos can’t be made into apps deployable on the App Store. So Apple needs to get their ass in gear and change the SDK so we can conqure the App Store with AR goodness. It just so happens that people are already petitioning for this, check it out. […]
I work for a multinational advertising agency and I am currently looking at AR as a solution for a large North America wide advertising campaign. Currently there is a push to keep any AR to the pc only level. I strongly feel that portable devices be they iPhone, Android or Nokia or anything else are the real way of the future of AR. I want to get this campaign on that road but I need some ammo.
That said. Is it illegal or impossible to distribute an AR app that is not accepted in the store…or that would be using the above (I’m assuming hacked) API? If not how would one distribute it? Could it be done via a microsite?
Also, there is a lot of very, very good work above and I would like very much to talk to anyone who is experimenting with fiducial marking beyond the basic black and white glyphs…image based is ok, really intelligent recognition without markers or images (as in the activevision example) is outstanding.
I’ll just put it out there. If you are interested in talking directly please email me as a developer, company, if you have more examples or you just want to talk about the subject post here or please email me at:
