Synopsis[]

TRUE LIES -- Daphne's (Jane Leeves) ex-fiancé, Clive (guest star Scott Atkinson) is visiting Seattle. He wants to see her again. She recalls that he lacked ambition and didn't have a future. She pretends that she is already married, to dissuade him and introduces Niles (David Hyde Pierce) to him as her husband. A chaotic web of lies develops. Soon, they are all related— even Roz (Peri Gilpin). The evening gets out of control when Daphne realises Clive is now successful and ambitious, as she’d always wanted him to be, and tries to get out of the lie. However, Roz - posing as Frasier’s wife - also sets her sights on him.

Trivia[]

  • While pretending to be an astronaut, Martin declares that Buzz Aldrin's name has no special significance and is merely a result of a bee phobia. Though Martin is obviously lying, the nickname actually stems from Aldrin's childhood; the younger of his two older sisters frequently had trouble pronouncing "brother" and called him "buzzer", which was then shortened to "Buzz".

CONTINUITY

  • Despite claiming to have never had a serious boyfriend in Death Becomes Him, it is revealed that Daphne was once engaged to Clive in this episode. Subsequently, it is revealed in Visions Of Daphne that Daphne was engaged to another boyfriend before Clive. In that same episode, she gets engaged to Donny Douglas but leaves him at the altar for Niles. Furthermore, Daphne and Niles get engaged in The Proposal during season nine and that one results in an actual marriage in The Ring Cycle.

ALLUSIONS

  • Daphne pretends to be married to Niles so she can avoid romantic entanglements with the layabout Clive. Later, she realizes that Clive has become a captain of industry, and curses her decision to spurn him. At this point, Niles says, "Send in the clowns," a reference to a song that mirrors the current situation. In that song, the singer realizes that someone who she had previously spurned was now an ideal match for her. Both in the song and in the episode, the desired match is unavailable, causing regret in the relationship seekers.
