Frasier's Edge is the 9th episode of Season 8 of Frasier.
Synopsis[]
CAN FRASIER OVERCOME MID-LIFE CRISIS -- WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM FORMER PROFESSOR? -- When Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) is poised to receive a prestigious lifetime achievement award from local broadcasters, he suffers the first pangs of a sudden mid-life crisis and rushes to consult and joust with a psychology professor/mentor (guest star René Auberjonois, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine") -- an equally stuffy academic who speaks his peculiar language and can address his nagging insecurities. Meanwhile, Niles (David Hyde Pierce) notices that Daphne (Jane Leeves) always seems to be voraciously hungry and he is overly praised by a well-meaning Martin (John Mahoney), who fears Frasier's award will make his other son feel diminished.

Trivia[]
- The storyline and jokes about Daphne's weight gain was a ploy to cover up Jane Leeves's real life pregnancy with her daughter Isabella. This episode, however, is the first one in which the problem is acknowledged.
- The celebrity caller in this episode is Neil Simon who, as Andy, is unsure if he's on air or not. He says "Hello" twice, just like his song "Hello Again".
- Niles' (David Hyde Pierce) response to Martin (John Mahoney) at the awards dinner, "I'm not some green-eyed monster burning with envy for Frasier," is a reference to William Shakespeare's Othello, Act III, Scene iii: O, beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock, The meat it feeds on.
