The annual needs hearing for federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds is a routine exercise for local governments, but this year a new twist was added. Municipalities must develop a 10-year plan of needs and deficiencies to be used as a reference tool by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Davison City Council conducted the hearing Monday, seeking items for a wish list which will be screened according to HUD guidelines, then prioritize to determine which projects will constitute this year’s CDBG application. City Manager Jack Abernathy said HUD plans to develop a community profile with the needs and deficiencies report.
The new Italia Gardens in Davison Township isn’t really new, but a continuation of a family tradition dating back more than 60 years. Brothers Don and Pat Haley added the Davison location to supplement the family’s restaurant in downtown Flint, on the corner of Grand Traverse and Court streets. With an Irish last name of Haley, Don said he’s accustomed to explaining the Italian heritage expressed with the restaurants cuisine. Their grandfather, Albert Barone, and his wife immigrated from Italy and began the first Italia Gardens on Detroit Street in Flint almost 63 years ago, he said.

The PA system is the latest thing at Davison High School, and it is interesting as a party telephone line. Mr. Voller said he couldn’t tell any more jokes in class now, the “magic ear” might be turned on. Davison High was quite a fashionable place last week. Those sophisticated seniors were all decked out in their best bibs and tuckers to have their pictures taken.
Davison’s cross country team will travel to Hastings this Saturday to compete in the second annual Hastings invitational meet. This will be the first scheduled meet this year. The team ran on Central’s course last Thursday against Flint Tech. Coach Mitchell was very pleased with the showing and thinks the team has progressed farther this year than at the same time last year. The first home meet of the year will be Oct. 12 against Flint tech.
