Israel strike reduces Beirut building to rubble in seconds

An Israeli strike reduced a building in Beirut to rubble amid a huge cloud of smoke and dust on Friday, 22 November. The airstrike hit the Chiyah area of the Lebanese capital’s southern suburbs on Friday (November 22). Lebanon’s health ministry said that, as of Thursday, the casualty toll since October 2023 stands at 3,583 people killed in the country. The figures do not distinguish between combatants and civilians. In a warning on X, an Israeli military spokesperson said that the airstrikes were targeting “Hezbollah facilities and interests,” without providing further details. Hezbollah strikes have killed more than 100 people in northern Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Actor Jude Law has revealed the strict rules he had to adhere to while filming the new Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series. The two-time Oscar nominee stars in the forthcoming Disney+ coming-of-age series, which follows four children searching for their home planet after getting lost in the Star Wars galaxy. Appearing on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Friday (22 November), Law compared his new adventure to legendary 80s film The Goonies, before revealing the filming rules actors must adhere to when filming for the franchise. This includes no buttons on costumes and no paper. Sir Keir Starmer has said that the UK is “not at war” and suggested there had been “irresponsible rhetoric” from Russia. Ukraine has fired British long-range Storm Shadow missiles into Russian territory for the first time, The Independent understands, the latest sign of a change in stance from Western countries on involvement in the conflict. Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol as part of a local radio round on Friday, 22 November, Sir Keir Starmer was asked “are we at war” in relation to the conflict in Ukraine. “No, we’re not at war, but Ukraine certainly is, because Ukraine has been invaded by Russia, and that war has now been going on for just over 1,000 days,” Sir Keir responded. In a bid to help prevent violence against women and girls, Bournemouth AFC has released a video showing a male and female fan on their walk home from the stadium. The video shows a lone female fan concerned about getting home from the game, as statistics reveal one in two women feel unsafe walkine alone after dark. In contrast, the male fan walks casually through an unlit park with headphones on. The video, produced alongside White Ribbon, Dorset Police, and BCP was shared on X, formerly Twitter on Thursday (21 November). Sir Keir Starmer was confronted by a BBC radio listener who warned him that "elderly people are going to die" following cuts to winter fuel allowance. BBC Radio Lincolnshire caller Maxine asked the prime minister how he was "going to live" and urged him to back down on the announcement. Sean Dunderdale told the PM the listener had been wearing extra layers and couldn't put the heating on this week. Sir Keir pointed the caller, who was not entitled to pension credit, in the direction of the warm homes discount which is available to those who receive the guarantee credit of pension credit or are on a low income and have high energy costs.
