UFC president Dana White has stuck back at the suggestion that Conor McGregor’s cancelled UFC comeback fell apart over money disputes.
It has been nearly three years since the Dubliner last fought after he suffered a serious leg injury in his defeat to Dustin Poirier in July 2021
McGregor has been on a long road back to the octagon ever since and had been in the frame to take on Michael Chandler since last year.
It was revealed last week that their mooted showdown – which had been set for UFC 303 on June 30 – had been cancelled.
Warning signs began when McGregor pulled out of a pre-fight press conference in Dublin at the very last minute earlier this month.
Injury ultimately ended the Dubliner’s hopes of a comeback but there have been suggestion that money played a bigger role in the fight’s cancellation.
In response to the suggestion that the 35-year-old was trying to negotiate a higher purse for himself, White hit back.
‘Conor McGregor… I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again, Conor McGregor has never done that,’ the UFC chief told The Jim Rome Show.
‘Conor McGregor never leads up to a fight and tries to renegotiate a contract or get more money. He’s never even done anything remotely close to that.’
‘He is as solid as solid can be, when it comes to being a business partner. Conor McGregor is hurt right now, it’s absolutely real.
‘Yeah, no, he’s never done anything like that.’
The fight is still expected to taken place this year, with a delay of at least two or three months expected.
