Rosemarie DeWitt and Ron Livingston hid from angry Sex and the City fans who would 'scream' at him over Berger break-up

"He really got a lot of heat for a long time," says DeWitt.

Rosemarie DeWitt and Ron Livingston know that hell hath no fury like a Sex and the City fan scorned.

The La La Land actress, who married Livingston in 2009, revealed on Tuesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show that the pair used to have to hide from irate fans of the show who would "scream" at him in public because of his character Jack Berger's infamous decision to break up with Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie via a Post-it note.

“Back in the day, when we first started dating, we’d be walking in the West Village and there’d be those Sex and the City tours and Ron would be like, ‘Go left! Go left!’” DeWitt recalled. “And we’d have to duck into Magnolia Bakery or something because women would come up and scream at him. They’d be like, ‘You broke up with her on a Post-it!’ You know what I mean? So he really got a lot of heat for a long time.”

Berger and Carrie dated during the first half of the show's sixth season, but ultimately went their separate ways when he left her a simple break-up note that read, "I'm sorry. I can't. Don't hate me." Barrymore, a die-hard SATC fan who later made a guest appearance on its reboot And Just Like That, explained that she’d recently rewatched the original series and believes the world may have been a little too hard on Berger.

“When Berger broke up with Carrie on the Post-it note, which is, by the way, so much more than us girls get now. That seems like a novel in this day and age of ghosting,” she said, before quoting his note. “‘I’m sorry.’ Okay. ‘I can’t.’ Now I know where you’re at. ‘Don’t hate me.’ Well, that’s… we’ll figure that out later. I may or may not, but it’s so informative and everyone poo-pooed it back in the day.”

Barrymore also noted that Carrie wasn’t exactly innocent when it came to their split, either. “Carrie…. She’s hard,” she confessed. “I was like, ‘I want to be Carrie! I’m Carrie!’ Watching it this time, I was like, ‘Uh, Carrie’s a lot. Carrie can push you away. Carrie has got some issues.’”

She continued, “She really pushed him and… they were not doing well or thriving. He wasn’t the worst guy for having to say, ‘I think we’re in a bad pattern here.’”

“Drew has some notes for Carrie about making it work!” DeWitt teased, before sharing that her husband continued to receive flak for the break up from fans for “a long time” afterward.

While Barrymore commended SATC for being “very women-forward,” she declared that “we need to let Berger off the hook” these days. When DeWitt noted that the host appeared to have a lot of empathy for Berger and his decision, Barrymore replied, “I do! Now, I’m not like, ‘You jerk!’ I’m like, ‘Uh, maybe you needed to go. Maybe you needed to get out of that.’"
