Advancing Health Equity and Diversity (AHEaD): Stanford Population Health Summer Research Program

Have you wondered what it is like to do quantitative public health research? Are you interested in finding out how research can have a real impact on health?

Bio-X Undergraduate Summer Research Program (Bio-X USRP)

Bio-X USRP provides an opportunity for Stanford undergraduates to conduct hands-on research, build awareness of interdisciplinary areas, and network with Bio-X faculty for 10 weeks in the summer. Participants receive a $7,500 stipend.

BioE Research Experience for Undergraduates

The Department of Bioengineering (BioE) offers Stanford undergraduates stipends to conduct research in partnership with BioE faculty and their research groups over the summer full-time for 10 weeks.

Canary CREST Program

The Canary Center at Stanford is dedicated to early cancer detection research. As part of its efforts to train the next generation of scientists, the Canary CREST Program offers paid and unpaid 10-week summer internships for undergraduate students.

Carnegie Summer Internship in Plant Biology

 The Summer Internship in Plant Biology provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to gain research experience in plant research laboratories. The interns will work side-by-side with graduate students or postdoctoral researchers, and they will learn various laboratory skills, research methods, and knowledge of plant biology and life science.

Data Science Undergraduate Research Pathways (DSURP)   

DSURP is a new program at Stanford that will take place this summer. It provides an opportunity for students without easy access to research at their home institutions to be paired with a mentor and faculty member to conduct research in data science over 8 weeks during the summer at Stanford. Participating students will also meet other undergraduate research peers, have the opportunity to attend research seminars, and present their work at the end of summer quarter session.  Students selected to participate in the program will receive a stipend of $6000. The program is 8 weeks long from June 24–August 16, and applications are due by 11:59pm PST on March 3, 2024. We especially encourage students from non-R1 institutions to apply, and such students will receive priority selection. Diversity, Respect, and Inclusion are Vital for Excellence (DRIVE) in Research Pathway Program

The Stanford Maternal and Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) offers the Diversity, Respect, and Inclusion are Vital for Excellence (DRIVE) in Research Pathway Program, which aims to improve the diversity of the workforce underrepresented in maternal and child health-related research, while supporting mentorship and training.  The program provides a stipend to underrepresented minorities (URM) and first-generation and/or low income (FLI) Stanford undergraduate students with no prior research experience. Students are matched with established investigators to work on maternal and child health-related research projects for 10 weeks during the summer while also attending career exploration and skill development seminars.

Health Career Collaborative (HCC)

The Health Career Collaborative is a student-driven health career exposure & mentorship program that connects 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students from East Palo Alto Academy to undergrads, medical and graduate students, and faculty at Stanford. The HCC's goal is to expose students from disadvantaged and/or underrepresented backgrounds to the exciting field of healthcare in aims of making the future workforce of medicine more representative, and its delivery more equitable. LCLS Internship Program

The LCLS has a well-established, paid 10-week summer internship program for undergraduate and graduate students looking for internship opportunities. The primary goal of the program is to provide interns with a stimulating, real-world research experience.

Technical projects are matched to the interests and skills of each intern, as well as to the programmatic needs of the facility. Each intern is partnered with a mentor, typically a staff scientist or engineer, who directs the internship project during the summer. Start and end dates are flexible, allowing the program to accommodate a large diversity of students.

Leadership Education for Aspiring Physicians (LEAP)

Leadership Education for Aspiring Physicians (LEAP) is a project-based seminar series designed for Bay Area premedical students seeking structured leadership development while improving community health and wellness.  Successful participants will develop, implement, and evaluate community-directed projects aimed at improving health outcomes for a community of their choosing.

Pre-Renal Initiative

Stanford's Pre-Renal Initiative seeks to develop a thriving research training program in adult and pediatric nephrology and (benign) urology for undergraduate students of diverse backgrounds. During the 10-week summer program, students work full-time in the labs and clinics of Pre-Renal Faculty Mentors. Throughout the summer, additional programming is provided in the form of renal science seminars, professional development seminars, social events, and career path conversations with faculty, students, and industry professionals. The program ends with an opportunity for participants to present their research experience at the National Institutes of Health. If selected for the program, housing and a living stipend will be provided as well travel expenses for the NIH presentation at the end of the program. 

Science, Technology, and Medicine (STM) Summer Program

This program is designed for high school (rising juniors and seniors) and pre-medical undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in medicine, STEM, medical research and development, or health care design, with a specific focus on Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine.

Science, Technology, and Reconstructive Surgery (STaRS) Summer Internship Program

Each year, the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery hosts 15-30 talented high school and undergraduate students in our research laboratories.  The program is free to participants. STARS interns spend 7 weeks mastering basic lab techniques, participating in research projects, and presenting their work all under the mentorship of experienced researchers. Typically the internship begins in late June and extends to the first week in August, exact dates to be determined.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI)

SLAC offers 20-25 undergraduates an 8-9 week paid internship at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in Menlo Park, California. SULI interns receive a stipend, travel expenses and free housing on Stanford campus.

SLAC Summer Internship Program

Participants in this program include high school (ages 18 and older), undergraduate and graduate level college students. Our internship programs are designed to provide students with stimulating, real-world work experiences. Interns can work up to twelve weeks from May until September, depending upon department needs and student school schedules. All students must be authorized to work in the U.S. and must pass a basic background check.

Stanford Cardiovascular Institute - Undergraduate Summer Research Program

The 10-week Stanford Cardiovascular Institute Summer Research Program is designed to provide meaningful research experiences to a diverse cohort of undergraduate and medical students from across the country in the field of cardiovascular science. The long-term goal is to bolster a diverse pool of scientists and physician-scientists and expose them to the landscape of 21st century translational research and medicine. One of the primary goals of the program is to increase diversity in cardiovascular research and medicine. This program is open to students from undergraduate institutions, including community colleges, as well as medical students. Applications are due January 31st, 2022.

Stanford CARE Summer Immersion Program in Data Science and Vulnerable Populations

The Stanford Center for Asian Health Research and Education (CARE) is offering an immersive, online course in Asian Health for undergraduate and graduate students, anchored by a 9-week summer immersion in Data Science and Vulnerable Populations. This exceptional program leverages the unique aspects of Stanford’s world-class research, technology, and medical infrastructure to train scholars to become superb population science researchers. By the end of the program, scholars will utilize tools to conduct large database analysis, understand core concepts in health care research, and identify problems/solutions in vulnerable populations. In addition, scholars will effectively engage with technologists, entrepreneurs, non-profits, and population science researchers.

Stanford Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine & Imaging Summer Research Internship

The Stanford Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Imaging (AIMI) is excited to launch its annual Summer Research Internship for high school students interested in exploring technical and clinical aspects of AI in healthcare. During this two-week virtual program, we aim to spark interest and empower the next generation of AI pioneers in medicine through a combination of lectures on AI in healthcare fundamentals, hands-on research projects, and mentoring activities with Stanford researchers. Student Lead opportunities are also available for both high school and undergraduate students, and an extended independent research internship opportunity may be available for interested program participants. Our hope is to inspire students to develop innovative AI solutions to advance human health. There is no fee to participate in this internship.

Stanford ChEM-H Undergraduate Scholars Program

Are you a postdoc who has taken a non-conventional path to your current research? Do you want to mentor a young scientist who, like you, is interested in blending distinct fields of science to ask compelling research questions?  The Stanford ChEM-H Undergraduate Scholars Program provides interdisciplinary research experiences to students in the physical science, engineering, or life science fields. The program offers Stanford post-docs the opportunity to mentor and undergraduates the opportunity to gain depth in a research area complementary to their chosen or intended major.

Stanford Clinical Observation and Medical Transcription (COMET) Fellowship

Stanford Medical Scribe Fellowship (COMET) is a one-year post-baccalaureate program designed for highly motivated students interested in pursuing a career in the health professions. Program participants (scribes/fellows) are trained in medical terminology and clinical documentation. They work side-by-side with faculty physicians as experienced medical scribes, seeing patients together at Stanford Healthcare Clinics.

Stanford Medicine, Storytelling & Medicine Summer Program

The Stanford Neurodiversity Project (SNP)

The Stanford Neurodiversity Project (SNP) is recruiting students to serve as camp leaders at the Stanford Neurodiversity Project - Research, Education, and Advocacy Camp for High Schoolers (SNP-REACH) this summer! We are looking for dedicated undergraduate or graduate students who are passionate about neurodiversity, community service, advocacy, and have great organizational skills to help plan and contribute to the camp over the summer. During camp, camp leaders expand on lectures by professors, researchers, clinicians, and neurodivergent student advocates through small group discussions, and guide campers to develop and execute neurodiversity advocacy projects using universal design for learning and design thinking approaches.

Stanford Summer Community College Premedical Program (SSCCPP)

SSCCPP is a six-week residential experience for current community college students considered low-income and/or underrepresented in medicine. The program provides exposure to medicine through topics in health disparities, leadership challenges in health provision and administration, science courses, professional development, clinical exposure, the medical school application process, and postsecondary and graduate/professional school financing. There is no fee to participate.

Stanford Summer Research Program-Amgen Scholars Program

The SSRP-Amgen Scholars Program is a fully-funded research-intensive residential program that takes place on Stanford’s beautiful campus for an eight-week period. Participants are matched with a member of Stanford’s distinguished faculty and work in one of our state-of-the-art research facilities. Each participant works with both a faculty member and a lab mentor to craft a research project. The lab environment provides challenging projects and involves a broad range of research techniques that are feasible within the eight-week period. The program culminates with a research symposium, where students present individual talks and posters on their summer projects in front of their peers, faculty, lab mentors, University administrators, and general public.

Sustainability and Earth Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SESUR)

The Sustainability and Earth Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SESUR) is a 10-week summer research program for Stanford undergraduates from any area of study who want to learn more about environmental science and the planet we live on. Students find a project - or propose one of their own - and work with a faculty member from the Doerr School of Sustainability in the lab or in the field (or remotely) through the summer. Students present their work at a fall scientific symposium.

Stanford Online offers free online courses taught by Stanford faculty to lifelong learners worldwide, and a variety of professional education opportunities in conjunction with many of the University’s schools and departments.

Storytelling in Medicine Summer Scholar Program

Stanford University’s eight-week virtual program in Medical Humanities emphasizes study in creative expression—poetry, fiction, nonfiction, dance, visual art, podcasting, and more—that encourages students to explore through stories and lectures the complex influences of medicine, art, and the human experience. The human experience finds its voice and understanding through the arts—both embodied and on the page—and in the complex and rapidly-changing landscape of healthcare. Through a program of study that includes a rigorous combination of writing workshops, lectures, conversations with medical students and physicians who maintain an art practice, interdisciplinary study in multiple avenues of artistic expression, and intensive one-on-one work mentorship, our Summer Scholar Program offers gifted students an original and intensive opportunity to document, inquire, reflect and celebrate the complexities of our lives. All students will be mentored to create a high quality final project in the media of their choice. 

Summer Research in Geosciences and Engineering (SURGE)

SURGE provides undergraduates (from Stanford and other U.S. institutions) with a mentored research experience in a geoscience or engineering laboratory. This fully funded, eight-week, summer residential program combines a rigorous research assignment with comprehensive training and mentoring. SURGE targets rising undergraduate juniors and seniors.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

SURF is designed for undergraduates from Stanford and other U.S. institutions. SURF interns receive a stipend for 10 weeks during the summer to live on campus and work with a faculty mentor in the School of Engineering and other students to produce an identifiable research result.

The Radiological Sciences Laboratory Research Experience for Undergraduates

The Radiological Sciences Laboratory (RSL) is a research division of the SOM Radiology Dept., specializing in Biomedical Imaging.  Qualified undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines are encouraged to apply to work with RSL faculty, full time, over the summer quarter. VPUE-Sponsored Summer Research in Biology (B-SURP)

The Department of Biology offers paid research internships to current Stanford undergraduates who want to spend the summer participating in ongoing faculty research projects to learn biological research methods. Participating students are usually rising juniors who have completed at least one quarter of Bio core or Hum Bio 2A, or especially well-prepared rising sophomores.
