We're located in Iowa City, the first UNESCO City of Literature and the hallowed haunt of generations of America's greatest writers. Our faculty and programs are national leaders in nonfiction writing, book studies, the digital humanities, and other core and emerging English studies specialties. 

Iowa is rightfully known as the Writing University, and we are its nexus. We collaborate closely with the Iowa Writers' Workshop and the university's other communication-focused departments, centers, and programs.

MA in English

Work side by side with your fellow scholars in the PhD and MFA programs. The program is excellent preparation for doctoral studies, as well as for careers in fields such as book studies, publishing, and education. 

MFA in Nonfiction Writing

Explore the history and innovations of creative nonfiction genres, and develop your literary artistry through Iowa's trademark workshop method. Our professors and mentors are bestselling authors, celebrated poets, groundbreaking essayists, and visionary journalists. 

PhD in English
