[edit]From French est, German ist, Latin est, Ancient Greek ἐστί (estí), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ésti. Cognate with Italian èssere, Yiddish איז (iz), English is, Russian есть (jestʹ), Polish jestem.
