[edit]From Ancient Greek βαθύς (bathús, “deep”) + σφαῖρα (sphaîra, “sphere”). Genericization from the particular 1930s bathysphere named "Bathysphere". The name 'bathysphere' coined decades after the introduction of the device in the 1890s.
