[edit]From Middle High German alt, Old High German ald (northern variant of alt), from Proto-West Germanic *ald, from Proto-Germanic *aldaz, from Proto-Indo-European *altós, *h₂eltós, from *h₂el- (“grow, nourish”). Compare Limburgish aad, Luxembourgish al, Dutch oud, Low German old, West Frisian âld, English old.

Usage notes
[edit]- This is the original form and the secondary form is auw. Like other Kerkradish adjectives with secondary forms, the original form, aod, mostly occurs with singular neuter nouns and in predicate form. In other instances the secondary form, auw, is preferred.
