[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From an East Central German word for “sow on heat”, derived from Middle High German rangen (“to run back and forth”), from the root of Proto-Germanic *wringaną (“to wring”). Related with wringen and rangeln (“to scrap, wrestle”). Note that the loss of initial w- in Range is simply the regular High German development, whereas in rangeln (which is of Low German origin) it has a different reason; see the lemma.
