Etymology

From an earlier *opi. Related to Latvian -up, -p. Formed from the genitive singular -õ + a particle -pi. Compare the old adessive ending -íep.

Suffix

1. added to nouns to give allative meaning, i.e. "in the direction of", "towards", "to"

   gãlas (“end”) → galóp (“towards the end”)

   pavãsaris (“spring”) → pavasarióp (“towards spring”)

   vélnias (“devil”) → velnióp (“to hell”)

Usage notes

A formerly productive suffix, it is now limited to certain fossilized adverbs and to dialects.
