Glyph origin
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Probably from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ŋak (“bird”), and cognate with 鶚 (OC *ŋaːɡ, “osprey”) (STEDT) and Burmese ငှက် (hngak, “id”) (Hill 2019). Said Sino-Tibetan root may be an areal word; compare Proto-Austronesian *manuk (“bird, chicken”).
