Etymology

Ideophonic: A reduplication of (OC *pʰɯn, “silk ribbon; disordered, confused → numerous”). Attested in Guanzi and Mengzi, meaning "disorderly, confused". Possibly cognate with (OC *ban, “annoyed; numerous”), (OC *baːl, *baːn, *ban, “numerous”).
