From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰátiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ǰʰátiš, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰéntis, from *gʷʰen- (to strike, slay). Equivalent to हन् (han, “to kill”, root) +‎ -ति (-ti).
