Αἰαία
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Probably related to ἀετός (aetós) and Αἰήτης (Aiḗtēs). Thus from an unattested *Αιϝαία (*Aiwaía), from *αἴϝα (*aíwa, “(related to) bird”) + -ῐ́ᾱ (-íā, “pertaining to, belonging to ("of")”), the first from *h₂éwis (“bird”). Similar outcome of Ancient Greek Γαῖᾰ (Gaîa). Cognate with Sanskrit वि (ví), Latin avis, Old Armenian հաւ (haw).
