Contradictions

[edit]

Understand

Modern-day Malacca is small, sleepy city that belies its wealth of history.

Get around

Malacca is by no means a small city, but exploring on foot is a good idea.

My understanding is that the historical city center is small, but the urban sprawl is fairly large. (WT-en) Jpatokal 05:21, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

You got a point there. The opening sentence for Understand has the word "small" removed (at post time). 192.228.185.198 15:59, 24 April 2009 (EDT)

There are quite a few inline links to external images on a third party site - the images themselves are useful and relevant (although the site as a whole isn't). What's the policy/consensus on keeping them? 220.255.7.204 09:47, 7 April 2009 (EDT)

Kill 'em all. Any images should (licensed permitting) be uploaded here. (WT-en) Jpatokal 12:17, 7 April 2009 (EDT)

Eye On Malaysia

[edit]

Could anyone update the Others section to include the ferris wheel named "Eye on Malaysia"? It used to be in Kuala Lumpur but has since moved to this place in 2008 or so. Yes, I admit that it is strange to introduce something "modern" amongst the historical features of Malacca, but it's still a tourist attraction. 192.228.185.198 15:59, 24 April 2009 (EDT)

As seen that Eye On Malaysia is currently not in service until further notice, there will not be any activity available, but merely a huge giant standing at the shore of Malacca Straits. By (WT-en) kititto 11:44, 12 August 2010 (GTM +8)

Contradiction. Taxis are friendly.... taxis are a rip off

[edit]
  • Most of the taxis in Malacca don't have a metered system, and they often charge according to their likes.
  • Metered Taxis are just about everywhere...

I don't know which is true, but the second paragraph has what appears to be a egregious plug for a random taxi driver. I'll update the page after I visit in a few weeks if I am able to form an opinion.

Culling sleep and eat sections

[edit]

I suspect this article has suffered from a lack of attn recently. It was clearly very good at one stage. I have started a makeover by culling the (very long and touty) sleep and eat sections. Touty entries and those without any useful information have been deleted. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:25, 1 April 2010 (EDT)

I would that the Sleep section needs further culling. A city of only 500,000 very likely does not need 55 hotel suggestions, and cutting about half of this list out, leaving only the best options, would probably be more helpful to the traveller in determining the best place to stay. Give the traveller too many options, and you might as well hand them a phone book and let them pick randomly. Texugo (talk) 14:38, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ringo's Foyer blurb ripped from Lonely Planet SE Asia Guide

[edit]

Can edit this myself as I'm staying there soon (13 Feb) but putting a note here in case anyone has first-hand experience of the place and is able to do an original write-up. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 27.32.130.70 (talkcontribs)

Malacca/Melaka

[edit]

Per Wikivoyage:Naming conventions, I dispute the change in name. The government of Melaka state can declare a change of the official English-language name, but they can't automatically change what spelling is most used in the English language. I propose to revert the spelling of this article to Malacca and to maintain the spelling of Malacca (state) for the time being. We can revisit this in 5-10 years. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:09, 22 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Agree completely. We haven't moved Czech Republic to Czechia just because the Czech government has decided to recommend that horrible word as an English equivalent to Česko, but we might in a few years if and when the new name takes off. There's no reason for Malacca to be any different, though of course like the Czech case we can note the new spelling in the article. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 23:07, 22 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
If there are no objections soon, I will change the city's name back for the purpose of this article. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:58, 24 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Agree, and we should also undo the change in the Malacca_(state) article. Drat70 (talk) 05:36, 24 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Page banners

[edit]
Banner 1
Banner 2 (current)
Banner 3
Banner 4
Banner 5

A selection of page banners. I personally like the composition of banner 2 better, thus have set it as the article banner. Feel free to undo this change, if you disagree.--Renek78 (talk) 09:28, 29 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

I like banner 3 or 5, but I haven't been to Malacca yet. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 03:29, 24 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I actually prefer Banner 3. Those buildings are quite iconic whenever you visit Malacca. The dog2 (talk) 17:36, 24 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

What would this article need to become a featured destination? /Yvwv (talk) 23:49, 11 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

At a quick glance: some listings need coordinates, the Eat section looks a bit chopped up with all these subheadings with just one or two listings below them, Connect is empty and some passages could need photos. --Ypsilon (talk) 16:33, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
