Matthews is a small town in North Carolina. It is considered a suburb of Charlotte, and is located at the southeastern border of Mecklenburg County.

  • Train Depot and Visitor Center, 210 Matthews Station St, +1 704-847-3649. M–F 9AM–5PM, Sa 10AM–4PM. Learn about the history of the town and check out the souvenirs for sale.
  • 1 Center of the Earth Gallery, 7448 Valleybrook Rd., +1 704-996-3256, . Mondays by appointment only, Tu-F 11AM-5PM, Sa noon-5PM. Probably Charlotte's best-known gallery, and one of the cornerstones of the arts district. Provides corporate art to numerous major corporations, and represents several dozen artists of significance. Worth a look, though the prices may put off casual buyers.

Go west on US-74 to get to Charlotte. Heading east will take you immediately to Monroe, and eventually the beaches near Wilmington.

For hiking, Kings and Crowders Mtns. are nice - only an hour away.
