Bridge
Appearance
A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles such as a body of water, valley, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. There are many different designs that all serve unique purposes and apply to different situations. Metaphorically the word is used to indicate means of providing connections, communication, transportation or transformation from various states or positions to others.
Quotes
[edit]- I know it works for me.
As we cross the bridge — the burning bridge —
With flames behind us,
We front the line.
It's you and me, baby, against the world.- Kate Bush, in "Burning Bridge" (1985)
-
By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.The foe long since in silence slept;
Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;
And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.- Ralph Waldo Emerson, in "Concord Hymn" (1837)
- When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.- Paul Simon, in "Bridge over Troubled Water" on Bridge over Troubled Water (1970)
