chatbots
[edit]I wonder if we should put in a strong recommendation against using chatbots to craft unblock requests. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 14:32, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
ChatGPT: Decline a user block appeal on Wikipedia on the grounds that the appeal was written by an AI engine
|
---|
Dear [User], Thank you for submitting an appeal regarding your block on Wikipedia. After careful consideration and review, we regret to inform you that your appeal has been declined. This decision is based on the fact that your appeal was written by an AI engine, which goes against our guidelines and policies for user appeals. Wikipedia strives to maintain a community-driven and human-centric environment where users actively engage in discussions, contribute their knowledge, and address concerns. While we appreciate the advancements in AI technology, the use of an AI engine to compose an appeal contradicts the essence of genuine human communication and participation. We encourage you to take an active role in your interactions on Wikipedia by expressing your thoughts, concerns, and arguments personally. Engaging in discussions with other users, demonstrating a willingness to understand and adhere to our policies, and contributing positively to the community can help in resolving disputes and potentially lead to the lifting of any block imposed. Should you have any further questions or require clarification regarding your block, please feel free to reach out to us. We are here to assist you and provide guidance. Thank you for your understanding. Sincerely, [Your Name] Wikipedia Administration |
- I'm thinking we might want to do this too, at least in this essay. I'm seeing requests that seem to be written by bots or other tools more often. I don't think BEANS is an issue as clearly the idea of using a bot is already out there. 331dot (talk) 08:18, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- Meh. If they are writing acceptable, germane appeals, then I have no problem. The one's I've seen lately are laughable? merde? ah, wholly inadequate. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 12:04, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- The trouble with them is that they're not acceptable. The chatbots write lovely promises aligned with the project's ideals, but they don't address the specific details which triggered the block. What is the value of a promise of good behaviour that is written by a bot instead of [Insert your name here]? At best they are an indicator that the user is unwilling to engage with the policy and understand their block which makes it a solid indicator that the appeal should be declined... imo. - My favorite is the one's with [Insert your name here]. Adds extra zing. Warning against CHATbot's (whatever) in the WP:GAB might head off some

- A very strong recommendation. Perhaps even, "CHATBOT/AI generated requests may be rejected out-of-hand."-- Deepfriedokra (talk) 18:09, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
Ban Appeals to Mr. Wales
[edit]Given that Jimbo Wales has surrendered his powers, is he still able to hear appeals of bans he made as this guide states? 331dot (talk) 15:59, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- Yes. He of course has the ability to ask a steward to take an action. However, that said, I think the better venue for this question, would be to ask him on his talk page, where he is with this. - jc37 17:10, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- I am mostly asking for clarity; I don't seek to change anything. 331dot (talk) 23:03, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Are IP Blocks supposed to block password resets too?
[edit]It looks like my ISP is blocked under a Range block. This gets super annoying whenever I forget my password. Apparently, Password reset function is also blocked when the IPs are blocked. Is this intended? It sounds like a weird punishment if it is. Can someone clarify what can be done to fix this? -bssasidhar- >Talk Page 08:32, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Bssasidhar, wrong forum, I recommend asking at WP:VPT. Sandstein 19:58, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
Improved version of User:Enterprisey/unblock-review.js is available
[edit]Hello friends. Since User:Enterprisey/unblock-review.js is unmaintained and has accumulated some bugs over the years, I have forked it and fixed several bugs. Feel free to try it out. Although be sure to disable the old script to avoid the two scripts fighting with each other. User:Novem Linguae/Scripts/UnblockReview.js. Enjoy. –Novem Linguae (talk) 10:52, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
Mistaken identity?
[edit]Is it possible admins might mistake me for a vandel if I say that I did nothing wrong when I'm appealing a block on my IP caused by someone else using the same IP vandalising this website or me being a victim of collateral damage from a range block? Can anyone give me advice about what to do if that happens? John Kryten (talk) 21:22, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
- It depends on the circumstances. For example, it's very difficult to lie about this sort of thing on some ISPs, so it wouldn't really matter what you say if you've been vandalizing. On other ISPs, a CheckUser would have to look deeper and spend more time analyzing the data. Not everyone wants to spend their time doing that, so it's possible they might just a cursory review to see if anything sticks out, then let you off. Before doing a block, however, I'd like to be sure, so I'd probably spend a bit of time poking around. If you're in the same household as a vandal, you'd probably get blocked. That's just how it is. It's pretty rare that anyone believes "my little brother did it". NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 03:52, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answer although I would like to ask: what is a cursory review John Kryten (talk) 13:09, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
