Want to help shape the future of the Wikipedia editing experience?
[edit]Hi Loooke,
The Design Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation is currently seeking relatively newcomer Wikipedians for user studies about their experience with current editing tools and to test out some prototype editing tools. If you’re interested in helping to shape the future of editing on Wikipedia, we would love to have you participate! The study session will take approximately 30 minutes, maximum of 45 minutes.
The study will take place in the next couple weeks, and will require participants to have access to a webcam and microphone (or a laptop with built in cam & mic), with a quiet place to go for a research session. To participate, please email dchen[at]wikimedia.org and include the following information:
- Username
- Email where we can reach you
- Your city or time zone
- Best time to talk to you
Please let me know if you have any questions! Look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Daisy Chen

Page blanking
[edit]Please do not replace Wikipedia pages with blank content, as you did to Pr0201-b. Blank pages are harmful to Wikipedia because they have a tendency to confuse readers. If it is a duplicate article, please redirect it to an appropriate existing page. If the page has been vandalised, please revert it to the last legitimate version. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please edit the page and replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please see the deletion policy for how to proceed.
But anyhow, happy Christmas! :) — Smjg (talk) 01:51, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
HotCat
[edit]You might like to try the HotCat gadget, activated in your preferences, on the gadgets tab, editing section. Inline editing and autocomplete of categories, very fast and convenient. Apologies if you already knew about it and don't like it. Lithopsian (talk) 18:39, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

So, when are you going to fix the discovery dates? It's a serious problem and if I reverted your edits, it'd be justifiable. Holy Goo (talk) 12:04, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
- Wait, revert what edits? I'm fixing the discovery dates right now, in stages, for example this edit. Loooke (talk) 19:37, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
- On this subject, when you update the main page, would you mind updating my user subpage(s) as well? I needed a proof-of-concept before getting final opinions and going "live". They're split by year as mentioned in the various talk page discussions, so it might need moving from one page to another if a year is wrong. Thanks! Primefac (talk) 16:46, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
- Primefac, I'll try to do what I can. However, since I've fixed all the dates, and made a few changes since then, it may be easier to split the page entirely again. (Sorry.) Loooke (talk) 19:27, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Your Starbox astrometry edit
[edit]This edit created some peculiar additions to some of the infoboxes: ?'"`UNIQ−-ref-00000008-QINU`"'?. See for example Tau Ceti. Praemonitus (talk) 15:24, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
- I was WP:BOLD and reverted your edits to this template because it messed up too many pages. Praemonitus (talk) 20:23, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
- Oh yeah, sorry about the attempt. My goal was to have the template automatically replace hyphens with minus signs, like the {{DEC}} template. If done correctly it would enable you to type, for example, -3 instead of −3. I noticed it did cause the weird unicode error, but I looked back and couldn't fix the error. If you can properly implement this, please go ahead! Loooke (talk) 11:33, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
- Actually it should do the opposite, per MOS:MINUS. Please see the next post. Thanks. Praemonitus (talk) 14:53, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
- I know. What I meant by the previous sentence was that the hyphen in the -3 (which is incorrect) would automatically be replaced with a minus sign (which is correct). The edit to {{Starbox astrometry}} was intended to make editing easier so that one wouldn't have to type "−" every time a minus sign was needed. Thanks. Loooke (talk) 23:23, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, I understood your intention. This looks related to the error message: Help:Lua_for_beginners#Issues_with_the_current_implementation. Thank you. Praemonitus (talk) 17:04, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

Minus HTML symbol
[edit]Note that there is an HTML symbol for the minus (− = −) that is different than a dash. We should be using the former, not the latter. See MOS:MINUS. Praemonitus (talk) 20:18, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
Page move
[edit]Hello. I did a page move that I thought would be helpful with a simpler nomenclature per naming conventions. The new (and current) title is P/2006 VW139. After looking at all the links to the former page title and then looking at the infobox I have decided this may not have been a good idea. It seems to be a new page, according to the edit history, which is all I looked at prior to making the move. However, there are a large number of links to the former page title in "What links here".
I am requesting admin help by moving this back [1], and I will seek consensus for a name change on the talk page later. I don't want to cause a disruption to WikiProject Astronomy by having carried out this action. And I apologize to you for not being more careful in this instance. BD+03 2562 article
[edit]Thanks for your edits on the article, BD+03 2562. But where was your reference when you added that the star is part of the constellation Virgo? I-CANT-THINK-OF-USERNAME! (talk) 00:28, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- I used this site which takes the coordinates of the system and outputs the constellation that it's in. I didn't cite the source because it's implicit in the coordinates (11 50 15.5527 +02 45 36.472). Also, most other articles on stars (like Sirius, Vega, Rigel etc.) don't say the reference. NGC 3545B
[edit]You do know it isn't listed on the page you redirected to? Might make it harder to defend when the people who just voted to keep it as an article come complaining. Or not: I think only the creator was really excited about the article. Lithopsian (talk) 19:59, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

Hello! As I'm a relatively young editor, I don't have extensive knowledge on subjects like astronomy. Seeing as you've helped transform the other 2 space-related articles I've created (NGC 1403 and BD+03 2562), I decided to ask help from you. I've recently created a new article (CGCG 049-033), which is pretty low-quality at the moment. Could you help improve it? I'll try improving what I can. Here are some references that could help:

@UnsignificantEditor: I've added an infobox and a bit of extra prose. Most of it is from the SIMBAD database and the source you gave. Unfortunately I'm by no means an expert in radio astronomy, so that was about all I could add. Loooke (talk)

Thanks for updating Q1 Eri!
[edit]Hi Loooke - thanks for updating the wiki page for q1 Eri (HD10647) with my recently published paper - it is great to see it being disseminated beyond the publication. I have some other work that I completed earlier this year for a system that doesn't yet have a wikipedia page, and I would be interested in making a page for this. I wondered if you would be interested in working together to make one? Cheers

- Hi there! I am glad you found my edits to be useful. I have a bunch of star systems that I plan to create articles for, but unfortunately I'm a bit busy so this process is taking some time. It may be faster (and better) to just create these articles yourself, especially since you are an astronomer with more expertise on this topic, following the rules of WP:SELFCITE of course. I wonder how the NGC 1 and NGC 2 absolute magnitudes are calculated?
[edit]I tried to recalculate the NGC1 and NGC 2 absolute magnitudes from the apparent magnitudes given in the wiki infoboxes, however does not not give the exace answers. For example, for NGC 1, my calculated absolute magnitude is -20.4 instead of -22.08 using apparent magnitude of 13.65 and distance 64.7 Mpc. From m-M values (From Hubble Flow Distance Modulus of Galactocentric GSR), I got -20.4 also. Just wonder how the absolute magnitude of -22.08 is got here. Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you. Cerevisae (talk) 07:26, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Cerevisae: your apparent magnitude of -20.4 from the apparent magnitude of 13.65 and 64.7 Mpc seems correct - at least, that's what I got. There are several possible reasons why the number is different:
- 1. The absolute magnitude of -22.08 might be taking into account interstellar dust (i.e. interstellar extinction), which makes the object appear dimmer than it actually is.
- 2. The absolute magnitude of -22.08 might be calculated using different starting magnitudes. Perhaps the apparent magnitude was in a different band, like the B magnitude, which is commonly used for galaxies. Or the distance value might have been different.
- I prefer to take absolute magnitudes from the literature, even if they may contradict with apparent magnitudes and distances. This is because it might be against Wikipedia's No Original Research policy, but arguably it falls under a routine calculation. In any case, I usually don't bother calculating them. Anyway, best of luck. Loooke (talk) 17:54, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your info! :-) Cerevisae (talk) 07:58, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

Infobox galaxy
[edit]Hello Loooke.
I'm working to improve the astronomical region of Wikipedia. I've seen your edits here and there, thank you for your efforts! You seem like the right person to ask about this. I just added 'Surface brightness' to the infobox galaxy. The 'Surface brightness specify' was broken and nobody used it, ever. The one I added is working just fine but I'm still getting the old 'Surface brightness specify' on the selection field with the sentence (undocumented parameter). There's also another one in there with the same problem called 'credit'. I've tried to fix this by removing them but I can't find their location anywhere on the template.
Since you're very experienced with infoboxes and the like, I'm wondering if you could explain to me how to fix that issue.
Thanks for any help you can give me! DGSATI (talk) 22:10, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- @DGSATI: Hi there! I looked at this edit and at the moment, it doesn't seem like there's anything with your edit that would cause any problems. The one thing I could think of is that maybe it just took a while to update, which was why you still saw 'Surface brightness specify'. I'm not sure though.
- If the problem still persists elsewhere, maybe you could provide a link to broken article or something? Thanks! Loooke (talk) 05:54, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- Looke, it seems I jumped the gun on this one, you're probably right, I think it just took a while to update because the problem just vanished. I freaked out a little because it's a template thousands of pages are using.
- Thank you for taking the time to respond. DGSATI (talk) 10:41, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- No worries! Thanks for helping with the templates. Editing templates is a bit difficult, and I am certainly not an expert at it either. Loooke (talk) 19:13, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
