Dario Fontanella-Gregori (born 7 January 1952) is an ice cream maker in Mannheim and self-proclaimed inventor of Spaghettieis.
Life
[edit]Dario Fontanella's family comes from a line of gelato makers from Conegliano (Treviso) in Val di Zoldo in the Dolomites. His grandfather owned a gelateria since 1906. His father went to Hanover in 1931 to work in an uncle's ice cream parlor, before moving on to Mannheim, where he opened his first ice cream shop on 18 April 1933 on the Planken , Mannheim's main shopping street.[1]
Dario Fontanella was raised by an aunt in Conegliano, and spent his holidays with his parents in Mannheim. Today he runs four cafés with up to 60 employees in Mannheim, and supplies restaurants and supermarkets with ice cream made in his factory, which can produce around a tonne of ice cream per day.
He was awarded the Bloomaulorden in 2014, which is regarded as the highest civic award in Mannheim.[2]
For Ecumenical Church Day in 2017, he created an "Ecumenial ice cream" with toasted brioche pieces mixed with a Riesling grape sorbet swirl.[3]
He never patented his spaghettieis, and appears regularly in media. The show Galileo on ProSieben aired three episodes about Fontanella, all of which were broadcast in the summer.[4][5][6]
