datasets.load

- The result of this discussion was that the discussion of the dataset.load package was reduced to a single sentence. Delius (talk) 18:11, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
The section of datasets.load package is in my opinion unworthy of a section here. It is a package but not one important, central to the R community or one of the most used packages 83.51.169.184 (talk) 14:04, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- I agree that this particular package is not important or central enough to be discussed here. But I would go further than just deleting that section. I propose to merge this entire page into R (programming language). Delius (talk) 09:38, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- I agree; it's only here because it used to have its own article and it was decided that should be merged. At most there could perhaps be a sentence or two about the package. – Joe (talk) 10:42, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

Merger Proposal
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- The result of this discussion was that this page should not be merged into R (programming language) because it is foreseen that this page will be extended further in the future. Instead information from R (programming language) will be copied onto this page. Delius (talk) 18:08, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
I propose to merge R package into R (programming language), which already has a section on packages that can easily be extended to include the information on this page. Delius (talk) 09:40, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. This article is already too long to fit in a section of the parent article and there is considerable room for further expansion. The reasons for splitting it off in the first place were discussed here. – Joe (talk) 10:39, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for the link to the other discussion. Is the article really too long for merging into R (programming language)#Packages? Are there not many articles that have much longer sections than that? CRAN is a very important aspect of R (probably the most important reason for its popularity), so I feel that it deserves a long section in the main R article. Delius (talk) 11:27, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose, because having this as a separate article allows for further expansion in this article without bloating the main "R (programming language)" article, as mentioned in that other discussion. I agree that "CRAN is a very important aspect of R (probably the most important reason for its popularity)". That's a reason for considering rewriting that article to include a separate section entitled CRAN. (You might also change the title of the "Package" section to "CRAN", but I haven't studied it enough to recommend that.) Regarding article size, Wikipedia:Article size#Size guideline gives guidance that basically says that articles with "prose size" between 1 kB and 40 kB are fine. This article has not quite 5 kB, and the "R (programming language)" article is close to 14 kB. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DavidMCEddy (talk • contribs)
- An alternative to merging this article into R (programming language)#Packages would be to merge the useful information in that section into this article. For example the paragraph on the CRAN Task Views would fit well into R package#Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) and the paragraph on the Tidyverse would fit into R package#Other packages. Also the paragraphs on R-Forge and Bioconductor seem useful. I am not enough of a wikipedian to know whether it is o.k. to duplicate information like that by just copying it over. Delius (talk) 11:59, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- I think that would be better. It's not so much a question of prose length but topics covered. R (programming language) ought to be focused on the language itself; whereas this article has room for more detailed discussion of things like CRAN, Bioconductor, and notable individual packages. You can feel free to copy paragraphs between articles as long as you note the source in the edit summary. – Joe (talk) 12:19, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
