Added "sortable" to table
[edit]I added "sortable" to the table - so you can get the list of towns in alphabetical order, or even the comments in alpha order (which surprisingly seems to make some sense). What doesn't make any sense is sorting by image (no effect that I can see), or sorting by population (use the index number if you want to do this). The population sort is troubling: it puts (approx) 240,000 after 2,350. I'll check the function to see if there is a way around this. On the other hand, if you'd rather that the table not be sortable, just take out the word "sortable" after "wikitable." Cheers, Smallbones (talk) 22:12, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- I've seen this problem before, but I've forgotten the suggestion of how to fix it. In the mean time, just click it four times ;) Jolly Ω Janner 22:17, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- Sorting Population is not needed since the rank variable is in the same rank order. The problem comes with putting the text references in that column (there used to be a different problem in old help pages). I've put "|class="unsortable"" in front of the unsortable columns and that seems to work. You might want it on the comments column as well, but I don't think sorting that column hurts anything. At worst you can just revert everything I did if you think it doesn't help anything. Smallbones (talk) 22:52, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
Stoke Gabriel
[edit]...or others. Could this list be rounded-up to 50 settlements or something? 46 just seems a bit of a random number to stop at. I'm sure there are others that are around the size of the smallest on the current list (Stoke Gabriel, for example, like I have said in this section's title [but I only mentioned there 'cause I live there]) that could be mentioned on this. Just wondering, that's all.

- Stoke Gabriel is a village, not a town. It would be very difficult to find the populations of all the villages especialy as there's no real definition of a village. We would need to find all the populations of them to enable us to list the 50 largest settlements; otherwise we'd be missing out some villages. Jolly Ω Janner 00:15, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'm pretty aware it's a village, seeing that I live here (like I said). I was just thinking that including some of the larger Devonian villages might add to the article a bit. I think I've seen similar articles which list a lot of settlements, including those which aren't towns or cities.

Gaps
[edit]Just had a brief look but there are some some gaps just in the places I know. Fremington http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadTableView.do?a=7&b=793641&c=EX31+3BZ&d=16&e=15&g=436839&i=1001x1003x1004&m=0&r=0&s=1274307397929&enc=1&dsFamilyId=779 has a parish popl of 9 477. Same must go for Braunton. No idea how to edit the table. Fremsley (talk) 22:22, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
- Fremington is not a town. Its parish council is referred to as a "parish council" and not a "town council", which is usually the best way to check if it's a town. Same applies for Braunton. We have to draw the line somewhere and it's to do with how the statistics are gathered. The data is collected on a parish by parish case and villages (even large ones) are often included in a rural area, which will give it a large population than what is actually in the urban area of the village. Usually, civil parishes for towns only include the urban area of the town and not much rural area. The exemption I can think of is Colyton. Jolly Ω Janner 13:18, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Two missing towns
