The film focuses on the titular SpongeKnob SquareNuts having an existential crisis upon realizing that he is the last of his species. In order to continue his bloodline, he propositions Sandy Cheeks for sex so that they can have children.[1]

The film was directed by Lee Roy Myers, one of the creators of WoodRocket.com, a website dedicated to creating comedic pornographic parodies of popular media.[3][4] Myers stated that the main priority in his filmmaking is to go viral, and that the comedic title was the first part of the film to be decided. The words knob and nuts in the title were chosen to create a humorous innuendo; the terms were also used to allow the film to avoid online censorship by not using more vulgar words.[5]

The costume for SpongeKnob in the film consisted of a box and a yellow condom.[4] The costumes used in the film are on display at the Erotic Heritage Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada.[6]

A sequel, titled SpongeKnob SquareNuts 2, was released in 2014.[2]

Reception

[edit]

The film has received praise for its faithfulness to the source material. Journalist Gonzo Green noted that the film uses similar cutaways, title slides, and a theme song reminiscent of the original cartoon. However, he also criticized the film as "disturbing", describing it as "like a train crash that you just can't look away from".[2] Similarly, BuzzFeed called the film "the stuff of nightmares".[7] The Hollywood Reporter described SpongeKnob's costume in the film as "clunky" and "crusty".[1]

Myers stated that the film performed well financially outside of North America.[3]
