Sophie Primas (born 7 June 1962 in Saint-Mandé) is a French engineer and politician who has been serving as Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade, Attractiveness and French Nationals Abroad in the government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier since 2024. Formerly a member of the Union for a Popular Movement, she was a member of the Republicans (LR) from 2015 to 2024.[1][2]

Political career

[edit]

Primas replaced Henri Cuq in the National Assembly in 2010 after his death, representing the 9th constituency of Yvelines from 11 June 2010 to 30 September 2011.[3]

Primas resigned her seat in the assembly after being elected to the Senate in the 2011 elections,[4] representing the department of Yvelines from 2011 to 2024. From 2017 to 2023, she chaired the Senate's Committee on Economic Affairs; she was the first woman to hold this position.[5]

On the local level, Primas was elected mayor of Aubergenville in the 2014 municipal elections.[6] Before being elected mayor, she served as deputy mayor responsible for finances, public markets and sustainable development.[3]

In the Republicans' primaries ahead of the 2017 French presidential election, Primas endorsed François Fillon.[7]

Ahead of the 2022 presidential election, Primas was part of LR candidate Valérie Pécresse's campaign team.[8]
