SP-291 (São Paulo highway)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SP-291, officially named Rodovia Mário Donegá, is a state highway in São Paulo, Brazil. It is classified as a transversal road and connects the municipalities of Ribeirão Preto, Dumont, Barrinha, and Pradópolis. The highway is approximately 26.34 km (16.4 miles) long and is managed by the Departamento de Estradas de Rodagem do Estado de São Paulo (DER-SP), the state’s road department.

Importance and Economic Role:

[edit]

SP-291 plays a crucial role in regional transportation, particularly for agriculture and agribusiness, as it facilitates the movement of goods between rural areas and urban centers. The highway is located in a region known for sugarcane production, serving as a key route for transporting raw materials to processing plants and distribution centers.

Modernization and Expansion Projects:

[edit]

On February 13, 2020, the São Paulo state government approved a duplication and modernization project for SP-291. The project involved an investment of R$ 56.6 million (funded by the Inter-American Development Bank) to improve traffic flow, safety, and infrastructure quality. The upgrades aimed to support economic growth and logistical efficiency, reducing congestion and accident risks. [1]

Management and Infrastructure:

[edit]

SP-291 is not a toll road, and its maintenance falls under the DER-SP. Improvements to the road include better signage, resurfacing, and lane expansions, particularly to accommodate heavy agricultural transport.
