Republic Bangla (stylized as R. বাংলা) is a free-to-air Indian Bengali-language news channel, launched on 7 March 2021, by Arnab Goswami's Republic Media Network. The channel was announced with the slogan "Kotha Hobey Chokhe Chokh Rekhe" (কথা হবে চোখে চোখ রেখে) (we will now see eye to eye).[2]
The channel is the third launched by Goswami, after the launches of Republic TV in English and Republic Bharat in Hindi. Goswami himself has spoken of his ambition to launch channels in all states and regional languages across India.[3]
Hosts
[edit]The main hosts of this channel are Arnab Goswami, Mayukh Ranjan Ghosh,[4][5] Swarnali Sarkar,[6] Meenakshi Dev Biswas, Samadrita Mukherjee, Renaissance Chakraborty, Anirban Sinha, Bishakha Rudra.[citation needed]
Controversies
[edit]Republic Bangla has been accused of airing news reports against Bangladesh since the fall of Hasina's government on 5 August 2024, as well as creating communal unrest and animosity between Muslims and Hindus in the country. It was also accused of being a threat to public security and destabilizing Bangladesh. Lawmakers sought to ban the channel from being broadcast in the country in November 2024.[7][8][9] One of the reports falsely claimed on 6 November 2024 that Bangladeshi Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus fled to France and will not return as a result of Trump's victory in the US presidential election.[10]
Republic Bangla has also been accused of exaggerating the communal violence against minorities in Bangladesh. It aired a news report advocating for Indian intervention in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, as well as the Chittagong and Cox's Bazar districts. The report was considered to be baseless and absurd.[11] A writ petition was later filed on 18 November 2024 seeking the ban of Republic Bangla in Bangladesh for spreading propaganda against the country.[12][13] On 28 November, Republic Bangla alleged that all satellite and cable television channels originating from India were shut down in Bangladesh in another report, which was clarified as a false report by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh.[14]
