Maluku Utara United Football Club (simply known as Malut United) is an Indonesian professional football club based in Ternate, North Maluku. The club currently plays in the Liga 1.
History
[edit]On 30 January 2023, mining tycoon David Glenn has successfully took over Putra Delta Sidoarjo, with the ownership transferred to Malut Maju Sejahtera and Glenn's company PT. Mineral Trobos Group. Glenn then relocated the club to the town of Sofifi, with the aims of improving football within a region known for producing talented players but lacking teams in the top two tiers of domestic football. Club was renaming the club as Maluku Utara United in the process.[1]
To prepare for the Indonesian 2023–24 Liga 2 season, Malut United signed a total of 13 players, most of whom were natives of North Maluku,[2] as well as enlisting Imran Nahumarury as their inaugural head coach.[3] The team will play their home games at the Gelora Kie Raha Stadium in Ternate[4] whilst planning to build their own stadium in Sofifi.[5]

Rivalries
[edit]The match between Liga 1 clubs Malut United and PSM Makassar is a new rivalry. Both clubs come from Eastern Indonesia and have the same logo and home uniform color, so they are also nicknamed the Eastern Indonesia Red derby.[7] The first match between the two will only take place in the 2024–25 Liga 1 season, where only then will Malut United be promoted from the 2023–24 Liga 2 season with the third-place status.[8] The match on 17 December 2024 ended in a 2–2 draw at the Gelora Kie Raha Stadium, it was the first match between them.[9]
