Chennai Institute of Technology (CIT) is a private autonomous engineering college located in Kundrathur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Established in 2010 by the Parthasarathy Seeniammal Educational Trust, CIT is affiliated with Anna University and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).[1]

History

[edit]

CIT was founded in 2010 with the objective of delivering quality engineering education combined with significant industry exposure.[1] In its early years, the institute began with four undergraduate engineering programs—Civil, Mechanical, Electronics & Communication, and Computer Science & Engineering—with an initial intake of 240 students. By 2015, CIT expanded to include Electrical & Electronics, Information Technology, and Mechatronics Engineering.[6]

In 2018, CIT was granted autonomous status by Anna University, allowing the institute to adopt a credit-based curriculum focusing on industry-aligned training and research.[7] Beginning in 2020, CIT placed special emphasis on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, partnering with industry experts to establish dedicated centers of excellence.[8]

Campus

[edit]

The CIT campus is situated in Kundrathur, on the outskirts of Chennai, spanning approximately 40 acres.[4] Facilities include:

  • **Academic blocks** with modern lecture halls and department-specific laboratories for core and specialized disciplines
  • **Central library** housing over 50,000 volumes, subscriptions to national and international journals, and a digital repository
  • **Departmental mini-libraries** for specialized reference
  • **Hostels and residential facilities**: Separate hostels for male (capacity 1,500) and female (capacity 1,000) students, each featuring dining halls, recreation areas, and 24×7 security
  • **Sports complex** with a football ground, cricket pitch, athletic track, indoor badminton and basketball courts, and a multi-station gymnasium
  • **Centres of Excellence** in collaboration with industry partners (e.g., TCS, Bosch) focusing on AI, VLSI design, renewable energy, and robotics
  • **Student Activity Centre** for cultural events, technical club meetings, and seminars
  • **Medical and dining** facilities including a central canteen, separate messes, and an on-campus health centre with qualified medical staff and ambulance service
  • **Transportation**: A fleet of 40 buses connecting major city locations (Tambaram, T. Nagar, Guindy) to the campus[9]
