School Nurses support the physical and mental health and educational success of children and youth by providing the link between health and learning. School nurses are leaders in their districts providing both direct care to students and consulting with school administrators to implement school health services and provide emergency nursing services as described in statute.

Consultation and Technical Assistance

The school nursing and health services consultant has the responsibility for providing leadership in the areas of school nursing practice, school health policy, and school health programs. Technical assistance is available on numerous topics including legal issues in school nursing, school health program planning, implementation and evaluation, education programs and related services for children with special health care needs, school health records, medication administration, and emergency services. This position also provides consultation to colleges and universities, professional organizations, and other child-serving health and education-related organizations and groups regarding preservice preparation, continuing professional development for school health personnel, school nursing, and comprehensive school health programs.

Pertussis in Wisconsin Schools

The Department of Health Services Bureau of Communicable Diseases continues to report Pertussis is increasing nationwide and that Wisconsin has reported cases in 49 counties as of September 20, 2024. Therefore, Wisconsin school districts can expect to be seeing cases of pertussis along with other respiratory infections (influenza, COVID, RSV) along with “the common cold” this fall, winter, and possibly the entire 2024/2025 school year.

In an effort to support the health and safety of students, staff, and community members, while balancing attendance concerns, the Department of Public Instruction has posted Pertussis in Wisconsin Schools information.
