- Halle Berry, Whitney Houston, Robin Givens, Pam Grier, Vanessa Williams, and Janet Jackson were considered for the role of Tina Turner. Jenifer Lewis auditioned, but ended up getting her mother instead.
- Eddie Murphy, his brother Charlie Murphy, and Ernie Hudson were considered for the part of Ike Turner.
- Tina Turner was not impressed with the film adaptation as she felt that she was victimized too much. However, Turner praised Bassett's portrayal of her.
