John Joseph "Jack" Nicholson is an American retired actor and screenwriter, who is best known for playing a wide range of starring or supporting roles, including satirical comedy, romance, and dark portrayals of psychopathic characters. He is well-known for his roles as Jack Torrance in the 1980 psychological horror film The Shining, Jack Napier/The Joker in Tim Burton's 1989 superhero film Batman, President James Dale in Burton's Mars Attacks!, and Francis "Frank" Costello in the 2006 crime thriller film The Departed. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor twice for his roles in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and As Good as It Gets, and also won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Terms of Endearment.
For Disney, he played Freddy Gale in the 1995 Miramax film The Crossing Guard. He was also the inspiration for the Air Conditioner in The Brave Little Toaster and he was spoofed by Genie in Aladdin.
He retired from acting in 2010, his last film being How Do You Know.
