The 76th Annual Primetime Emmys are set to put the TV awards calendar back on track when they take place on Sunday, September 15, 2024. This will be the second Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony in 2024, coming after the 75th Annual Primetime Emmys, which took place in January due to being delayed by last year’s historic WGA and SAG strikes. To clear any confusion, the Television Academy awarded the 2022-2023 TV season at the Emmys in January, and they will be honoring the 2023-2024 season at the upcoming 76th Emmys in September.
Leading the 2024 Emmys is FX’s Shōgun, which racked up a whopping 25 nominations. In addition to its nomination for Best Drama, Shōgun earned nods for stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, and Takehiro Hira, all of whom are first-time nominees. Sanada and Sawai, specifically, are also the first Japanese actors to ever be nominated as the lead in a Drama. Shōgun co-creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks gained nominations in the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series category as well. FX’s historical drama set in feudal Japan is only the second majority non-English language series to ever be nominated for Oustanding Drama Series at the Emmys, coming after Netflix’s Squid Game. The 2024 Emmys will be a huge moment for Asian representation in television, and fans can rejoice that Shōgun Season 2 is currently in development.
If most of Shōgun‘s 25 nominations turn into Emmy wins come September, it’s easy to see a new season arriving sooner than later. Moving on, FX’s The Bear continued to set records by scoring an impressive 23 nominations for its second season — the most Emmy nods earned by a comedy series in a single year. On top of this, The Bear has the most nominated actors from any show at the 2024 Emmys. This mighty list is comprised of lead actor Jeremy Allen-White, lead actress Ayo Edebiri, supporting actress Liza Colón-Zayas, supporting actors Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Lionel Boyce, guest actors Jon Bernthal, Bob Odenkirk, and Will Poulter, and guest actresses Olivia Colman and Jamie Lee Curtis. Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building then comes behind The Bear in the 2024 Emmy nominations with 21 spots in the comedy category.
HBO’s True Detective: Night Country dominates the limited or anthology series category with 19 nominations. Apple TV’s The Morning Show, HBO/Max’s Hacks, Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Fallout are then all tied with 16 nods each. Other fan-favorite shows that scored numerous nominations for the 76th Emmys include Netflix’s Baby Reindeer and The Crown, as well as Apple TV’s Lessons in Chemistry and Slow Horses. Overall, Netflix leads all streamers and networks with 107 nominations across 35 programs, followed by FX with its new record of 93 noms, HBO/Max with 91, Apple TV+ with 72, both CBS and ABC with 38, and then both Prime Video and NBC with 37. Disney, as a media conglomerate that includes Hulu, Disney+, FX, ABC, and more under its umbrella, reigns over the competition at the 2024 Emmys with 183 nominations total.
