Listen to some common Debs Park bird calls and songs! Do any sound familiar? Learning common bird sounds is a great way to develop your identification skills. All recordings were captured in Debs Park by California Climate Action Fellow, Ana Moreland.
The Anna’s hummingbird is the largest hummingbird found at Debs Park. With a brilliant green back and a pink throat and crown in males, they are a beautiful sight and easily identified by their “kissy” squeaks and chirps.
The Bewick’s wren makes a wide variety of calls. Each male’s song has subtle differences, but they frequently feature a trilling finish with three distinct notes.
The California Scrub-Jay is a highly vocal and communicative species that makes dozens of types of calls. We typically hear sharp squawks or even a clacking sound made with the mandible.
Debs Park is home to many common ravens. Their most common sound is their signature caw, but they are also known to make croaking, snapping, and gurgling calls. Ravens can be distinguished from crows through their throatier, deeper vocalizations.
The California Towhee is a large sparrow that is primarily found on the ground. Their metallic chirps are some of the most commonly heard around Debs Park, as well as the clearest to distinguish.
House finches are frequently found in large groups throughout Debs Park. They have a more melodious song than many of the other birds found here and can frequently be heard to chatter to one another.
Mourning doves are often confused for owls because of their gentle hooting song. Outside of the breeding season, they can be heard most easily as they take off and land. The mourning dove’s wings will make a signature whistling sound that many mistake for a call.
Nuttall’s woodpeckers can be identified through their rapid, high pitched calls or through their drumming. Nuttall’s woodpeckers have an even, rapid strike pattern.
Wrentits have one of the more distinctive songs found in Debs Park. The song of a male wrentit is said to sound like a bouncing ball rolling away.
