Sports Betting in Tennessee

The path to being able to bet on sports online has been an interesting one in this country. Over the years there have been a few laws that have prohibited people from being able to bet at all, but in recent years it has changed quite a lot. To simplify it for you I have made this little timeline of all the key events that led to the legalization of sportsbooks in Tennessee.

1992 – Introduction of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA)

In 1992 the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was passed and it effectively banned all sports betting in the US. PASPA’s goal was to make sure that there was integrity in American sports through stopping gambling. It stopped states from being able to license sports betting, by banning any operation of a betting service.

May 2018 – US Supreme Court Overturns PASPA

In May 2018 the US Supreme Court ruled against PASPA by claiming that it was unconstitutional as it was against the 10th Amendment. Having PASPA taken away meant that the individual states could decide whether or not they wanted sports betting to be legal.

May 2019 – Tennessee Lawmakers Introduce HB 0001

After the US Supreme Court overruled PASPA, the Tennessee lawmakers took some time to decide how sports betting would work within the state. In February 2019 they passed the bill HB 0001 that legalized online sports betting, but did not allow for retail stores. It also put no cap on how many online sportsbooks could operate in Tennessee.

April 2020 – TELC Approves Regulations

In April 2020 the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation (TELC) approved the final set of regulations for online sports betting, which allowed online betting sites to operate in Tennessee.

November 2020 – Online Sportsbooks Open

In November 2020, several TN sportsbooks launched on the same day, finalizing the legalization of online sports betting in the state.

List of all TN Sportsbooks

Like I mentioned before, the HB0001 bill didn’t limit how many sportsbooks could operate in Tennessee, so it means that there have been a few that have started up in the Volunteer state. The list below shows all Tennessee sportsbooks:

  • Action 247. Same day payouts available.
  • Betly. Live streaming on certain sports.
  • BetMGM. Huge range of markets for many different sports.
  • Caesars. Generous welcome bonus.
  • DraftKings. Live NFL streaming.
  • ESPN Bet. Two part welcome bonus available to new users.
  • Fanatics. Frequent promotions available to existing users.
  • Fanduel. Competitive odds.
  • Hard Rock Bet. Great customer service.
  • ZenSports. Optimized mobile app.

Sportsbooks no longer operating:

  • Superbook. Still available in other US states.

Tennessee Sportsbooks in Detail

1. BetMGM TN

BetMGM: Pros & Cons
BetMGM: Pros & Cons
  • Many payment options
  • Great mobile app
  • Cash out feature
  • Limited customer service options

BetMGM became available in Tennessee in November 2021 as it was one of the first sportsbooks that were licensed in the state. Since then it has continued to keep its name as one of the best TN betting sites thanks to its great range of sports markets, generous bonuses and live streaming.

Now people don’t believe me when I tell them this, but I swear it’s true. If you register a new account at BetMGM you can have your first bet returned as a bonus bet up to $1500 if your first bet loses. That’s what I mean when I say that they are giving out generous bonuses at BetMGM. And all you need to do to claim this bonus is register a new account and make a first deposit on the site. After that you can choose from over 30 different sports to place a wager on, including the UFC, as I think that BetMGM is one of the best sportsbooks for UFC.

Another reason why the people of Tennessee love BetMGM is because they are one of the best sportsbooks with cash out options. So if you are the kind of player that likes to get out while the going is good, then BetMGM might be the place for you.

The BetMGM mobile app is another great feature that you will find at BetMGM. When I was testing it out for this review I found it to be one of the most intuitive apps that I have ever tried out. With so many different markets and options available I thought that it could get confusing, but they have made it so easy to access everything you will need.

2. FanDuel TN

FanDuel: Pros & Cons
FanDuel: Pros & Cons
  • High payout rates
  • Live streaming available
  • Good range of payment options
  • Limited sports available

FanDuel is always a sportsbook that I recommend as it just ticks all of the boxes, so it’s no surprise that since it came to Tennessee in 2020 that it instantly became a favorite with sports bettors  If you sign up here, you can expect to find some competitive odds, great bonuses and a wide range of live streaming options.

At FanDuel, you can place a wager on more than 20 sports. Now this number of sports to choose from may not compete with other sportsbooks like DraftKings, they have focused there . I understand that this isn’t as many as other sportsbooks, but they make up for it by offering a heap of different markets on the more popular sports.

To help you get started, FanDuel has also recently introduced a welcome bonus that gets you $150 just for placing a wager of $5 or more. And what’s better is that it doesn’t even matter if your bet wins or loses. The bonus bets will instantly be added to your account after you register an account and place that first bet. It’s as simple as that.

Another reason why I love FanDuel is because of their massive range of live streaming options. Either on the desktop or the mobile app you can stream some of the biggest games of the season.

3. DraftKings TN

DraftKings: Pros & Cons
DraftKings: Pros & Cons
  • Great sports markets
  • Variety of payment options
  • Competitive odds
  • Limited customer service

DraftKings is another one of the country’s best sportsbooks that I highly recommend checking out. I can guarantee that whatever you’re looking for in an online sportsbook, you will most likely find it over at DraftKings. They’ve built a great reputation over the years in Tennessee as being a premium platform with a massive range of sports markets and really generous bonuses.

While we are on the topic of generous bonuses, I’ll let you know about the welcome bonus that you can claim at DraftKings just for signing up. They are currently offering a 100% match of your first deposit up to $1000 in bonus bets. To claim this offer you just have to create a new account, and deposit at least $5 or more.

But, moving away from bonuses, the main reason why DraftKings is regarded as one of the leading Tennessee sportsbooks is because of their huge range of markets. I personally believe they are one of the best NHL betting sites out there. But not only do they offer all of the best odds on the most popular leagues like the NHL, they also also have a huge range of markets for more niche sports, so I am sure you’re never going to run out of options by signing up with DraftKings.

4. Caesars TN

Caesars: Pros & Cons
Caesars: Pros & Cons
  • Great rewards program
  • NHL live streaming
  • $1000 risk free first bet
  • Only available on mobile

If you’re the kind of bettor that is looking for sites that offer live streaming, then look no further because Caesars is one of the best Tennessee betting sites with this option. Recently Caesars partnered with the NHL, which makes them one of the best NHL betting sites.

The current Caesars sportsbook welcome offer is also something that really makes them stand out from the rest. If you are a new customer and register a new account today, you’re able to have 100% of your first wager refunded in bonus bets up to an amount of $1000.

And the good deals at Caesars don’t stop there. The Caesars Rewards loyalty program is probably the best that I have seen at any sportsbook. Every time you place a bet, you are rewarded with points that can later be redeemed for bonuses, VIP experiences and even tickets to sporting events.

This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to talking about what Caesars can offer you. So, go and try it out for yourself and take advantage of their excellent bonuses.

5. Fanatics TN

Fanatics: Pros & Cons
Fanatics: Pros & Cons
  • Great loyalty program
  • High payout rate
  • Competitive odds on popular sports
  • Only available on mobile

The Fanatics sportsbook only recently came to Tennessee back in 2023, but it immediately became one of the most popular sportsbooks in the Volunteer State thanks to their frequent promotions and really rewarding loyalty program.

Like you would expect from one of the best sportsbooks in the state, the team at Fanatics are offering new customers a welcome bonus that I am sure you will love. After registering a new account you are able to receive all the way up to $1000 in bonus bets over the first five days. I really liked this option in comparison to others that I’ve found because it gives you a chance to try out a few different bets instead of having it all riding on the first bet. It works by having your stake matched up to $200 each day for five days. If you like the sound of this, all you need to do to claim it is opt in when you register.

As well as a great welcome offer, the Fanatics loyalty system is something that you ought to hear about. Depending on what kind of bet you place, you can receive 5% of all of your wagers back in FanCash. FanCash is similar to bonus bets, so it can be used to place a wager on any sports market you like, and the winnings are yours.

6. Action 24/7 TN

Action 247: Pros & Cons
Action 247: Pros & Cons
  • Same day payouts available
  • Diverse betting options
  • Detailed live betting
  • No esports markets

Since Action 247 entered the Tennessee online sports betting scene back in 2021, and it has become one of the best TN sportsbooks because of their diverse betting options and same day payouts. While we are on the topic of bonuses, the welcome bonuses at Action 247 are something worth looking into. After registering a new account at Action 247, you’ve got the choice to get $50 in free bets after placing a $20 wager, or you can opt in for a week of having your first bet each day refunded up to $100 in bonus bets if your wager loses.

7. Betly TN

Betly: Pros & Cons
Betly: Pros & Cons
  • Dedicated mobile app
  • Competitive odds
  • Good sports selection
  • Limited sports markets available

Betly first launched back in 2020, so it’s definitely one of the newer online sportsbooks out there. But since it has started, they have been gaining traction as a very competitive sportsbook as a result of their competitive odds and frequent promotions. If you sign up with Betly today you can receive the welcome bonus that will return 100% of your stake in bonus bets if your first bet loses.

8. ESPN Bet TN

ESPN Bet: Pros & Cons
ESPN Bet: Pros & Cons
  • Generous welcome bonus
  • Easy to use interface
  • Great customer support
  • Limited sports markets

ESPN Bet is one of the newer sportsbooks that are available in Tennessee, and how they have instantly become such a high end sportsbook. As well as offering some great odds on the most popular leagues, ESPN Bet are also offering their new customers a choice between two pretty generous welcome bonuses. The first offer can see you get given back up to $1,000 if you lose your first bet, and the other is a 200% match on your first deposit up to $500. To claim these you just need to opt in during sign up.

9. Hard Rock Bet TN

Hard Rock Bet: Pros & Cons
Hard Rock Bet: Pros & Cons
  • Available on desktop and mobile
  • Daily odds boosts
  • Great rewards program
  • No live streaming available

Tennessee is the last state where Hard Rock Bet has become available since their launch back in 2020. Hard Rock Bet is famous for their frequent promotions, daily odds boosts and a generous rewards program. If you sign up at Hard Rock Bet today, you can have your first bet refunded to you in bonus bets up to $100. While this may not be as much as some of the other sportsbooks out there, it’s still quite a generous bonus offer that can help you get started.

10. Wagr TN

Powered by Yahoo after the media giant acquired 100% of the social betting start up in 2023, Wagr remain an option for Tennessee residents. Wagr pride themselves on being a fun way to wager on current and future events with your friends online.

11. TwinSpires TN – Closed

TwinSpires: Pros & Cons
TwinSpires: Pros & Cons
  • Offered multiple sports
  • Competitive odds
  • Had multiple bet types

TwinSpires is no longer active in the Tennessee market. The decision was tsaken in February 2022 to win down the sportsbook and online casino operations so the business could focus their efforts on horse racing.

12. WynnBET TN – Closed

WynnBet: Pros & Cons
WynnBet: Pros & Cons
  • Was a popular site

While they’re a big name in the world of betting and sports gambling, WynnBet pulled out of eight different US states including Tennessee, in August 2023. They do still have operations in some states but TN was deemed not to be a viable candidate when the company reviewed their operations.

What Can’t You Bet on in Tennessee?

In Tennessee there are some limitations to what you are able to place bets on. These limitations have been decided on by The Tennessee Sports Wagering Advisory Council to maintain integrity in sports and protect people – particularly minors. So here is the list of what you can’t bet on in Tennessee:

  • High school sports. It is illegal to bet on any high school sports game.
  • Individual performance on college athletes. Placing a prop bet on the individual performance of college athletes is not allowed.
  • Non-sporting events: You are not allowed to place any wager on non-sporting events like the outcome of political elections.

Sportsbook Licensing in TN

Currently, The Tennessee Sports Wagering Advisory Council (SWAC) are the ones who oversee online sports betting in Tennessee. They took over from the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation on January 1 2022. The changeover occurred because the Tennessee Government decided that there needed to be a governing body that is able to regulate in a way that is tailored to Tennessee’s unique online-only sports betting model.
