ALL WHEEL DRIVE (AWD)

All-Wheel Drive has two independent motors for improved

redundancy, each with only one moving part for minimal
maintenance and maximum durability.

Unlike traditional all-wheel drive systems, they digitally

control torque to the front and rear wheels for far better
handling and traction control.

With two motors, one in the front and one in the rear, it
digitally and independently controls torque to the front and
rear wheels.

The result is unparalleled traction control in all conditions.

Conventional all-wheel drive cars employ complex mechanical

linkages to distribute power from a single engine to all four
wheels.
This sacrifices efficiency in favour of all weather traction.

FRONT WHEEL DRIVE (FWD)

FWD is used in TATA Nexon EV

RWD is used in KIA EV6 GT-Line

The simple drive train

The power produced by the motor is transferred to the drive wheels via
a gear box.

In EV’s, single speed transmission is used because the motor is efficient

in a wide range of operating conditions.

Even achieving the reverse gear is quite easy in an electric car, just
change the order of the phases for this.

You can see that output speed from the motor is reduced in 2 steps.

The only purpose of electric car transmission is speed reduction and associated torque multiplication.

An open differential in EV’s?

The reduced speed drive is passed to the Differential (open differential).

Open differentials have a problem of traction control, but open differential is more rugged and
can carry more torque.

The traction control problem that occurs in an open differential can effectively be overcome with
selective braking and cutting the power supply.
This can be accomplished with help from sensors and controllers.

In an internal combustion engine, this power supply cut by cutting the fuel is not so responsive.

Regenerative braking : The biggest plus

t
induction motor acts as a generator.
The inverter plays a crucial role here in adjusting the input power frequency and keeping the RMF speed below the
rotor speed.
This will generate electricity in the stator coils, which is way higher than the supplied electricity.
The generated electricity can then be stored in the battery pack after the conversion.

An opposing electromagnetic force acts on the rotor during this process, so the drive wheels and the car will slow
down.

This way vehicle speed can be accurately controlled during the drive using a single pedal.

The brake pedal can be applied for a complete stop.
