D.C.’s latest ode to fast food burgers arrives at a price point that doesn’t veer too far from the takeout window. Lucy’s opened last Friday in Petworth, adding an option for $6.99 quarter-pound cheeseburgers in the once-rotating bar space above Little Coco’s, the casual Italian restaurant at 3907 14th Street NW.
Washingtonian reports that Lucy’s is supposed to be a permanent fixture for a rooftop that recently hosted a pair of seasonal pop-ups, Baywatch-era Hasselhoff-themed hangout Coco Beach and ski lodge-styled Hot Coco.
Jackie Greenbaum, the co-owner of the local restaurant group behind Little Coco’s, El Chucho, Bar Charley, and Quarry House, tells Washingtonian that the basic hamburger ($6.49) at Lucy’s is a take on the sliders from the former Little Tavern chain. Those come with minced white onion and dijon aioli.
There are two other burgers: a Deluxe ($7.99) upgraded with bacon, cherry peppers, and white American cheese and a Royale ($15.99) that comes with foie gras and truffle aioli. Sides of fries ($2.49) are modeled after McDonald’s famous skinny spuds. A line-up of “& Coke” cocktails (bourbon, rum, Cynar) costs $9.
Greenbaum tells Washingtonian that she and co-owner Gordon Banks aimed to make the glass-enclosed rooftop feel like a basement bar. The team has serious credibility in that area considering it runs Quarry House, the beloved underground refuge for bourbon and burgers that finally re-opened about a year ago after three years of renovations following fire and water damage.
Quarry House is a finalist for a local Rammy award for Favorite Gathering Place of the Year this year, and Greenbaum and Banks are nominated in the Restaurateur of the Year category. Little Coco’s opened in September 2016, bringing the neighborhood a family-friendly spot for pizza, pasta, and a deep list of amaros.
