Shaw Bijou alum Kwame Onwuachi tells Washington City Paper that he was inspired to focus on the food of his youth at the new restaurant he’s opening inside the Wharf after seeing how excited people got about the fancy Caribbean snack he whipped up for one of entertainer Questlove’s food salons.

“I made beef patties with yellow pepper hot sauce and José Andrés was drinking the sauce,” he said, adding that supporters subsequently urged him to “cook like this all the time.” Well-wishers can see if he’s following through on their orders Thursday, October 12 — the day Kith and Kin is projected to debut.

Budding chainlet Silver is looking to have everyday diners provide feedback about seasonal additions to the menu. Chef and co-founder Ype Von Hengst invites up to 10 people to weigh in on new dishes at the modern brasserie from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 4. There is no cost to participate (register here), but attendees must commit to staying the entire time.
