For years, the true identity of Bitcoin’s creator, known only by the pseudonym “Satoshi Nakamoto,” has remained one of the internet’s greatest unsolved mysteries. Although Nakamoto disappeared from public view in 2011, speculation about their identity has persisted. A new HBO documentary, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, now claims to have finally uncovered who Nakamoto really is, promising to solve one of the most enduring enigmas in the world of cryptocurrency.

Cullen Hoback, the director of Money Electric, shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that he believes he has successfully tracked down the elusive Nakamoto. Hoback, no stranger to uncovering mysteries, previously directed Q: Into The Storm, an HBO documentary that revealed the identity of the person behind the QAnon conspiracy theory, which gained traction on the internet forum 8Chan in 2017.

Previous claims and speculation about Bitcoin’s creator identity

This is not the first time someone has claimed to have discovered Nakamoto’s identity. One notable example is Australian scientist Craig Wright, who has repeatedly asserted that he is the creator of Bitcoin. However, Wright’s credibility has been questioned, and earlier this year, he was referred to British prosecutors for alleged perjury.

The buzz around the HBO documentary has sparked heated debate within the cryptocurrency community. Crypto enthusiasts on Polymarket, a betting platform, are betting that American cryptographer Leonard Harris Sassaman will be named as Nakamoto. Sassaman, a respected figure in the cypherpunk community, passed away in 2011, shortly after Nakamoto stopped posting in early crypto forums.

Other candidates include Adam Back, a well-known member of the cryptocurrency space, who contributed to the foundational elements of Bitcoin’s code. Despite his involvement, Back has denied being Nakamoto.

Why the mystery around Satoshi Nakamoto?

Bitcoin was launched in 2009 by an individual using the Nakamoto alias, following the release of a whitepaper in 2008 outlining the concept of the cryptocurrency. Nakamoto remained active in Bitcoin’s development and the blockchain until 2010, before disappearing from the scene.

Nakamoto is considered one of the wealthiest individuals in the world, reportedly owning around 1 million Bitcoins. At current market value, this stash would be worth an estimated $63 billion.

There are several reasons why Nakamoto may have chosen to stay anonymous. One key factor is the inherent link between Bitcoin and anonymity, as the cryptocurrency’s decentralized nature was designed to bypass traditional financial systems. By staying anonymous, Nakamoto may have sought to protect himself from government scrutiny, particularly given that Bitcoin has been used in controversial transactions, including those on illicit marketplaces.

Will HBO reveal the truth?

While many have speculated about the identity of Bitcoin’s creator, it remains to be seen whether the HBO documentary will finally uncover the truth. The premiere of Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery airs on October 8 at 9:00 p.m. EST on Max. Crypto enthusiasts and skeptics alike will be watching closely to see what revelations the documentary brings to light.
