Students awarded campus-based loans may sign their promissory notes and meet the entrance counseling requirement on line through the ECSI website.  ECSI will email the login information to the student’s UNC email address for the promissory note signature process when the promissory note is ready to be completed. Below are step-by-step instructions on completing a Campus-Based Loan promissory note:
Students who have borrowed from University, Federal Perkins or Federal Health Profession Loan funds must complete an exit interview when they cease at least half time enrollment at the University. This includes students who withdraw and those who are graduating. Exit Interviews may be completed by logging into your account through the ECSI website. Failure to complete the exit counseling requirement could result in a loan being declared delinquent and/or a hold being placed on your student account. Our hold prevents registration and release of official transcripts from the University.

Exit Interview Instructions

  • Go to home.ecsi.net
  • Choose Students and Borrowers – Sign In or Register
  • Create a new account, if you do not have one.
    • You will need your Heartland Key to connect your account to your profile.
    • Contact ECSI if you do not have your key at 888-549-3274
  • The Exit Interview will be located in the Documents tab under your Student Loans & Accounts Receivable Account

If you have any questions regarding your loans or the Exit Interview process, please contact ECSI at 888-549-3274.

When campus based loan bills become delinquent, our office must follow a number of government mandated procedures to collect the debt. These procedures include and are not limited to, placing a registration and transcript hold on the student account, attempts to contact the borrower, reporting to credit bureaus and referral to collection agencies.

Emergency Loans awarded through the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid (OSSA) are administered through our office. Students awarded an emergency loan are emailed an electronic promissory note to sign and upload through the portal. The due date for these loans is indicated on the promissory note. While extensions may be granted for extenuating circumstances, these loans must be repaid within the term.

UNC-Chapel Hill Emergency Loans are interest-free, short-term loans. The purpose of the loan is to finance emergency expenses for currently enrolled UNC-CH students for which resources are temporarily not available. In the event an emergency has arisen to prevent students from having funds available for living expenses, such as food, rent, books, childcare, etc., a loan can be approved. Emergency Loans cannot be approved to pay University charges, such as tuition, since this is a planned expense.

To apply for an Emergency Loan, please complete the UNC-CH Emergency Loan Application located in the Loan Forms section, on the OSSA website.

Late Fees

Late fees are assessed in accordance with your promissory note. To avoid late fees, please ensure ECSI receives your payment on or before your due date. If you have any questions about late fees or payment posting, please contact an ECSI Customer Advocate.

Rejected Payment/Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) Fees

Any payments refused by the payer bank because inaccurate bank account information was provided, insufficient funds or a closed account, are subject to a $25.00 returned payment fee. To avoid fees, please confirm that your checking or savings account has sufficient funds and that your bank account information is correct before submitting your payment. Please note that failure to submit payment for the full amount due by your payment due date will result in a late fee as described above. If you have any questions about fees, please contact a ECSI Customer Advocate.

If you have any questions regarding your loans, please contact ECSI at 888-549-3274.
