Which products are hosted on brill.com and which products are hosted on other Brill platforms?
Brill.com hosts all Brill E-Journals and E-Books. We define an E-Book as an online monograph. 

There are separate platforms for Brill’s Reference Works, including the Collected Courses of the Hague Academy of International Law, Primary Sources, Bibliographies and Dictionaries. In addition, there are several resources available on standalone platforms. You can find the full overview at brillonline.com.

What access methods does Brill support?

Do you also publish Open Access titles?
More information about our Open Access program can be found here.

Where can I find your catalogs, flyers and price lists?
This page contains digital copies of Brill promotional materials, as well as title lists in Excel. Please note that product-specific materials, such as journal flyers, can be found on that product's page in the brill.com catalog.

How can I order Brill products (institutional customers)?

Which discovery and metadata vendors does Brill work with?
Brill's e- books and e-journals are fully indexed by third-party discovery products and services, including:

Access Management System (AMS) – ams.brill.com

How to register?
You can simply enter your email address in the user name field at ams.brill.com and request a password by clicking ‘forgot your password’. If you have any issues setting up an administrator account, please contact our Sales Support Team at [email protected].

What can library administrators do with their account?
Once you have registered as an institutional adminstistrator, you will be able to:

  • See your institute’s holdings
  • Download usage reports (COUNTER 5)
  • Add additional administrators
  • Co-brand your account with your institution's details
  • Control settings with regard to access (IP ranges, Shibboleth settings, link resolvers settings)

Can my institution have more than one administrator registered?
The AMS requires at least one institutional administrator. This institutional administrator will be able to add a variety of admin roles to the institutional account. For more detailed information, download the step by step guide to the AMS.

How do I see which resources my institution has access to?
Once you are logged as an institutional administrator you can see your institutions holdings under “Subscriptions”. For more detailed information, download the step by step guide to the AMS.

Can libraries apply their own branding on the platform?
If access to content is provided by an institutional subscription, your institution's name will appear in the navigation bar at the bottom of all pages of brill.com. You can also add a logo via the Account Details tab in the AMS. The uploaded image type should be JPEG or PNG and the size should be the maximum size of 200px wide x 100px high. Please contact [email protected] if you need help with this.

What authentication methods do you support?
The platform supports the following authentication methods:

  • IP-authenticated access
  • Open Athens
  • Shibboleth (All Federations supported can be found here)
  • Referring URLs
  • EZproxy (make sure that you make use of the last version of the Brill Stanza on the OCLC website).

Individuals will be able to register or authenticate using a personal account with username and password to make use of personal tools and for webshop orders.

Is it possible to manage my institutions IP addresses?

Usage Reports

 

What COUNTER release does Brill support?
We are compliant with COUNTER release 4 and 5. Please note that from 1-1-2021 we only support release 5 for brill.com.

What usage reports do you offer? 
We are compliant with COUNTER release 5. To access the COUNTER 5 reports for brill.com follow these steps:

  • Go to Brill’s Access management System ams.brill.com and use your credentials to login into the system.
  • Navigate to the Reports tab for your account and note the section ‘Current Counter 5 Reports’ at the top with a button ‘COUNTER 5 Reports’.
  • Clicking this button will direct you to the reporting portal (You can find a manual on how to use this portal here)

All your reports from January 2021 will be available in this portal. All earlier Counter reports continue to exist in the Archive section.

We offer the following COUNTER 5 reports:

    • Platform Master Report
    • Title Master Report
    • Item Master Report
  • COUNTER Standard
    • Platform Usage (PR_P1)
    • TR_B1 (Book Requests, Excluding OA_Gold)

What formats will I be able to download usage reports in?
You can download COUNTER usage reports in CSV and TSV.

What are the differences between COUNTER4 and COUNTER5 reports?
Here is some information from COUNTER. We recommend taking a look at the COUNTER website, where they added a lot of useful information around the new metrics. Note that from 1-1-2021 brill.com only supports COUNTER5.

How are entire book PDF downloads counted in COUNTER 5? 
Note that Brill delivers books both as separate chapters and as full book PDFs. One “entire book download” will be counted as one Total_Item_Request, being indicated in TR with Section_Type “Book”. One chapter download will also be counted as one Total_Item_Request, but is indicated in TR with Section_Type “Chapter”.

The Unique_Title_Requests metric can be used to measure cost per usage. Please refer to the COUNTER manual on this topic, especially page 10. 

Does brill.com support SUSHI? Can I access my reports via SUSHI? How do I set up SUSHI?
If you wish to harvest your usage data via SUSHI (2021 onwards), follow these steps:

  • Log into the AMS with your admin account.
  • Open the Reports tab in your account and click the button ‘COUNTER 5 Reports’.
  • In the Reporting Portal, click down your account name and select SUSHI. This will navigate to the SUSHI registration page.
  • Click Create SUSHI Credentials.
  • You will then be presented with your SUSHI credentials. They will also be emailed to you.
  • To then access the Brill SUSHI web service, simply point your own SUSHI client or access software to the following service URL: https://sushi5.scholarlyiq.com/counter/r5.

To harvast COUNTER stats for 2019 and 2020 via SUSHI, follow these steps:

  • Log into the AMS with your admin account.
  • Open the Reports tab in your account and click the button ‘COUNTER 5 Reports’.
  • You will find your Requestor ID and your Customer Reference ID there.

How to find the right journal?
Choose the subject area in which you would like to publish from the list of all available journals. You can then see which journal in particular best suits your topic. You can get an initial impression of the contents of each journal by having a look at the product overview and table of contents. Most journals also offer free content such as editorials and open access articles that you can browse through.

What is Brill MyBook?
Brill’s MyBook program enables users to purchase a print-on-demand paperback copy of books of their choosing, provided they have access to the E-Book version on brill.com, either through an individual purchase or via their institution. See more information here.

Researchers & Students

 

What are the benefits of creating a personal account on brill.com?
Anonymous users have a number of features they can make use of:

  • Store search results for one session
  • Store content pages and searches for one session
  • Export search results
  • Export citations in all formats
  • Recommend to a librarian
  • Send pages via e-mail
  • Share pages via social media

After registration a number of extra tools will be available. All tools can be managed on the My Lists page.

  • Set up and manage alerts (eg. TOC-alerts, new issue alerts)
  • Save search results and get notified on new results
  • Save and tag content pages for future use
  • Annotate pages

A personal account is also needed to make a purchase on the platform. The shopping cart and the orders can be managed on the account page.

How do I create a brill.com account?

  • Go to the Create Account button in the top of your screen and enter your details.
  • You will receive an email with a link to activate your account.
  • After you have clicked that link, your account will be ready to use. 

How do I access content I purchased?
Once access is available a green full access icon will be displayed. To access a purchased book chapter or journal article, go to the table of contents and click on the chapter/article. All our digital content is available as PDF, and most also as Full Text XML. To download content, click on the ‘Download PDF’ button.

How do I access content available to my University or other organisation?
Your organisation may have access to some content on brill.com; please contact your librarian if in doubt about what content your organisation has access to. You can also use the Access filter in our catalog.

Depending on what configuration your organisation has provided to us the access methods may vary. We always recommend contacting your librarian first to check the preferred access method for your organisation.   

Access via IP recognition
If your organisation has enabled access through IP recognition and you are accessing at the correct location then the content your organization has access to will be available.

  • Browse to the content you want by searching or using a previously saved bookmark
  • You can verify if you are authenticated by checking the ‘Access brought to you by’ message on product pages and in the footer
  • You can verify if you have access by checking the access icon on the content pages

Access via institutional login   
Institutional Login allows you to log in using your organisation's account. If your organisation has not requested their account to be configured to use Institutional Log In then this log in method will result in an error.   

  • Click on the “Login via Institution” button on product pages or go to this page directly
  • Search for your institution or select one if you have used this option before
  • You will be taken to your organisation login page. Log in with your username and password as provided by your organisation
  • Once you log in you will be returned to brill.com
  • You can verify if you are authenticated by checking the ‘Access brought to you by’ message on product pages and in the footer
  • You can verify if you have access by checking the access icon on the content pages

Webshop customers

Which products can I purchase in your webshop?
In the Brill webshop you can purchase the following products:

  • Print books (hardcover, paperback)
  • E-books (PDF download and unlimited online access)
  • Book chapters (PDF download and unlimited online access)
  • Journal articles (PDF download and unlimited online access)

It is currently not possibly to purchase journal subscriptions or journal issues via the webshop. Please contact our fulfillment partner for a journal subscription.

How I can purchase something in your webshop?
See page 8 of the brill.com user guide for a detailed description including screenshots.

How do I enter a P.O. box instead of a street address?
There are no separate fields for P.O. box on the billing & shipping page. You can enter P.O. Box in the street field and the number in the house number field.

In what formats are E-Books available?
All our E-books are available in PDF. These can be downloaded from the product page instantly after the purchase. You can also access your products via the Order History in your account.

Can I purchase or rent individual access to an article?
If you are an individual user you can purchase Journal Articles on brill.com using your Credit/Debit card, iDEAL, PAYPAL or Sofort. To purchase an article follow the instructions in the brill.com user guide.
You can also rent articles via DeepDyve.

What are the delivery times for print orders (after they become available)?
Hardcovers and paperbacks will be shipped to you by our fulfillment partner. Below you can find an indication of average delivery time in your region: 

  • US: 3-14 days
  • UK: 7-14 days
  • The Netherlands: 7-14 days
  • Germany: 7-14 days
  • Rest of Europe: 4-6 weeks
  • Rest of world: 4-6 weeks

What are the shipping rates for print orders?
Print orders are shipped to you by our fulfillment partner. The costs per order are the following (note: in Europe there can be differences due to VAT on shipping costs):

  • Europe: €3,90
  • America: $6,50
  • Rest of world: €12

What payment methods do you offer?
As an individual customer, you can pay via CreditCart (VISA/MasterCard), iDEAL, PAYPAL and Sofort. Payment happens via an a third-party service and takes you out of the brill.com site. During the payment process, it’s important not to close the window or go back in your browser. This might cause your order to fail. 

What is the status of my order?
Digital content (E-books, chapters, articles): can be downloaded from the product page instantly after the purchase. You can also access your products via the Order History in your account. Questions about this? Contact our Sales Support team.

How do I access digital products I purchased?
All our E-books, book chapters and journal articles are available in PDF. These can be downloaded from the product page instantly after the purchase. You can also access your products via the Order History in your account.

Do Brill products have a DRM?
Both downloaded chapters from books and downloaded articles of a journal are provided with a soft DRM. The digital watermark contains the user account from which the chapter/article was downloaded, as well as the date and time of the download.
