The Charleston Restaurants We Loved in June

By

If there’s one thing you must know about the people who work at Resy, it’s that we genuinely love restaurants.

This month, we lingered at great patios, revisited standby Italian gems, and took stock of the season’s best cocktails. One thing’s for sure: Summer’s here and Team Resy has the pro tips for enjoying it all.

For a hidden gem…

… tucked in North Charleston’s Riverfront Park, head to Momo. The seafood tower and oyster shooter are a must for your starters, but you really have to try the Indigo Butterfly cocktail — hands down my favorite cocktail in Charleston! Tart and sweet, and all things unique. Their burger is also a classic and so good, you’ll take a bite before you take a picture (#guilty).

Pro tip: Sub your side for their hushpuppies; you will not regret it. And know that their event space is wonderful for an intimate time with friends and family alongside spectacular views of the Cooper River.

I recently surprised my husband…

… with a reservation at Sushi-Wa, some of the hardest seats to score in Charleston. [Ed. note: Resy does have tips on how to get in!] Chefs Chris Schoedler and Kazuyuki Murakami have cultivated one of the most unique experiences in the city, and this visit was a standout as they had just returned from Japan. It was incredible to hear stories about their travels while sipping on sake and enjoying each course placed in front of us. By the end of the night, we had new friends sitting on both sides of us, sharing many laughs and interesting conversations.

Pro tip: Do not miss the Wagyu addition!

For a light dinner on a summer night…

… head to The Peacock. I got the summer peach salad, which was delicious. The drinks were also spectacular (the Daisy Buchanan comes with the cutest yellow flower on top) and the atmosphere on the rooftop at sunset was immaculate. Service was super speedy and attentive, too.

This new restaurant did not fail to impress…

Close your eyes, put your finger down on the menu, and you’re bound to have a delicious meal at XO Brasserie no matter what. They have lots of big family-style portions, so bring friends to share some of everything. Standouts were the housemade siu mai and crispy málà chicken, and I’m definitely going to go back for the lamb lollipops if they’re still on the menu! All around, an amazing new restaurant.

My go-to restaurant for Italian…

… is Le Farfalle. Start with the rosemary focaccia bread alongside their amazing whipped ricotta. Then order the chicken parmigiana with spaghetti pomodoro. Whatever you do, get the whipped ricotta!

I had a perfect solo dinner at…

Malagón. It’s a cozy Spanish restaurant with a small bar where your server is ready with great recommendations. The menu seems to have a rotation, but staple dishes like patatas bravas, tortilla Española, pulpo, and jamón ibérico remain. Like a professional, I didn’t skip the churros or a second glass of wine, but I do regret not bringing a friend for the paella (which looked amazing).

This place is all-around just awesome!

The atmosphere at Coterie is so cute. They have an outdoor patio that is covered in plants and greenery, which makes for such a nice escape in the city. It feels super tropical and the dim lighting makes it a great date night spot.

I got the noodles with tofu (hands down the best tofu I’ve ever had), which had a fried egg on top (also delicious and I have no idea what they did to make it so good) and came with a spicy sauce and a sweeter soy sauce. I am a huge mezcal fan, so I absolutely loved my drink, which was the Suffering is Optional cocktail. It had pineapple and banana in it, and made for such a good summer drink. Their cocktail menu in general is just so good and unique that it was hard to choose!

If you’re looking for some great Italian food…

… look no further than Wild Olive. Their wild mushroom and ricotta cheese bruschetta is such a unique and fun take on a traditional bruschetta. The grilled Mountain River elk loin with a potato horseradish gratinato, broccolini, and blueberry agrodolce was a fantastic main. As for dessert, I finished it all off with their amazing half-baked cheesecake.

For a great atmosphere on the water…

… head to Saltwater Cowboys. I had some great apps: a GIANT pretzel, pickle chips, brussels sprouts, etc.! It’s the best weekend hangout spot in Mt. Pleasant.
