Adolf (アドルフ Adorufu?) was the father of Collette. Guts encountered him during his two-year apostle hunt.[1]
Appearance[]
In the manga and the 2016 anime, he wore a zuchetto and a cape. His beard and hair were white, and his expression was shown to be kind and understanding.[1]
In the 1997 anime, he had brown hair and a beard. His movement was reliant on the use of a cane. He wore a brown attire with a zucchetto and yellow shoes.
Personality[]
In the manga, he was a peaceful, religious man with a generous heart and a caring father. He was disappointed with his nephew's decision to go to the battlefield as he wished for him to enjoy his idea of the simple pleasures of life and have a family of his own, instead of dying an unnamed soldier.[1]
In the 1997 anime, he was shown to be a kind man who only wanted the best for his granddaughter and attempted to stop the bandits, though he failed due to being feeble.
Story[]
Black Swordsman Arc[]
En route under heavy rain, Guts a horse carriage pulls up. When Adolf, manning the carriage, asks Guts if he'd like a ride, Guts replies that "he's no good with priests" and mentions being pursued by evil spirits. Eventually, the swordsman accepts after multiple declines. Guts begins to settle down, meets his daughter and has some wine. Noticing his wound and his "some sort of sword", he questions Guts on whether he's a mercenary, to which Guts replies that he is "something like that". The old man then says he doesn't have much respect for someone who lives by the sword and dies by the sword, killing other people in that manner. Guts replies, saying that's why he can't stand priests.[1]
The old man goes on talking, telling the story of his nephew, who chose to become a soldier and died five years earlier. He considered his nephew foolish for trying to live by the sword and ending up a nameless soldier rather than the family man he could have been. Guts, however, argues that the nephew got what he wanted in his life and must have died happily. Shortly after, Guts falls asleep and experiences a nightmare brought on by an incubus. Guts manages to kill it and it frightens both Collette and her father to see such a creature. At this moment, his Brand begins to bleed and he orders them to stay inside while he goes outside to handle the spirits that are pursuing him.[1]
The sudden appearance of the dead frightens the horses drawing the carriage, which forces Collette to fall out and onto the ground. Within seconds, she is impaled on the spear of a skeleton, which rises from the ground beneath her. She is tossed from the spear and left in a pool of her blood, causing the old man to cry out her name and wait for the end to come as Guts continues slaying enemy after enemy. However, the man is killed when a spirit-possessed Collette decapitates him.[1]
