W. William Leaphart was an associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court, a position to which he was elected in the state's nonpartisan elections in 1994.[1] He was re-elected in 2002[2] and his current eight-year term ends in 2010. Leaphart announced that he would not run for another term. He retired on December 31, 2010.[3][4]
Education
Justice Leaphart was born in Butte, Montana. He received his B.A. degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Montana in 1969 and his J.D. degree from the University of Montana School of Law in 1972.[1]
Career
Justice Leaphart began his career in 1972 as a law clerk to Judge W.D. Murray of the U.S. District Court. In 1974, he began a general law practice with his father. He worked in this capacity for 21 years. He was elected to the Supreme Court in 1994.[1]
